If you still have access to the hard drive...
1. make backups now (if your hdd dies that's it.. and it will happen probably more sooner than later)
2. check the hard drive for errors and try to get windows to fix them for you... start>my computer>select the hdd/partition and right click on it>properties>tools>click under error-checking>check now.
3. a good program that may give you an idea about the status of your hard drive is speedfan
http://www.download.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html it checks how hot your system is running and the S.M.A.R.T tab will tell you about the general health of your hdd.. check can also get a through analisys by having your hard drive status compared to statistical data if you have internet access.

you may also want to run diagnostic tools for your hdd... download the one for your hard drive, install and run
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#wdc

if you can't access the hard drive. get a drive enclosure, Uninstall the hdd from your system and put it in the enclosure, connect the enclosure via usb/firewire to another sytem and try to access it and then back up your data.. now you may also want to run diagnostics and after backing up your data is upto you if you want to keep trying to get your hdd to respond or you may want to start thinking about getting a brand new one.

fact: your hdd is destined to die when depends on the quality of the hd and how much you've use it. so always back up your data while you can and don't rely on hd that are over 3 or 4 years old.

formatting wipes a drive clean. so if you format your external then all data on it will be lost. I assume this is what you mean.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to reformat a drive and not lose the data that is stored on it.
I would suggest formatting the drive as NTFS if you are using Windows or HFS if you are using a Mac and then use the software that was included on the drive to backup your computer.
Be sure to copy the software that came ON the external drive to your computer before reformatting. If you are unable to find the software on the drive, you will have to buy the software from Memeo or contact Western Digital for assistance: http://www.memeo.com/choose_backup.php

My Book has same thing of "Drive is not

try to recover it from PC inspector File recovery - before formatting. Though, trying to format the disk will clear the data, and can be recovered by recovery tools only - try recovering it without formatting.

Pc suddenly requires my western digital to be formatted

The drive is likely failing; Windows is unable to located a boot record for the drive and therefore it wants to format it in order to continue; trying it on a 2nd pc confirms this.
It may be possible to use a utility such as Data Doctor's Data Recovery to recover the data but it's going to cost some $$.
You can check out the utility at http://www.software.com/view/8432/0/data-doctor-windows-data-recovery-software
I've used this in the past to recover data from drives that were overwritten; and to undelete files that were lost when someone accidently deleted a user's windows profile.
Hope this helps! good luck!
