SOURCE: Cord winder not working

Most times you will have to replace the cord rewind. Sometimes just the cord, but usually there is a problem with thr reel contacts. But now that the spring has unwound, you will have to replace it. You will need model number rather then Red Star.

SOURCE: vacuum not running; do I have to replace the cord winder or just cord?

Typically, the cord and winder are supplied as a unit.  It is possible to fit new cord to an existing winder, but the amount of labour involved will make the job more expensive than simply exchanging the complete unit.  Even if you're going to do the job yourself, it's simply not worth planning to just fit new cable (unless you are a masochist with unlimited time and patience).  Pay that bit extra for a complete unit - you'll be glad you did (or you'll be sorry if you don't!).

My vacuumcleaner Miele Flamenco II, the powercord doesn't want to go back in. the hole lenght is out and doesn't wind up anymore. what can I do? Thanks Wijnanda

Well, First of all, let's make sure that the vacuum still works with the cord in this position?
At least you are not without a vacuum, right?

Now-- Temporarily you will have to do what we used to do before Cord Rewinders were invented, and just coil up the cord, neatly, when you store it.

And next -- getting it repaired:
If you have pulled it all the way to the 'STOP'-- nad the internal catch is not releasing-- try one more firm pull-- if the catch is not releasing, then the cord winder is either jammed, or broken. Either way, someone is going to have to tear into it, and either repair or replace the winder spring, or catch-- Repairs could run $100.-- Are you interested in making that investment?
I will tell you that Meile is a very well made machine, -- and to replace it is going to be MANY hundreds of dollars-- So-- your next decision, is to decide if you want a newer machine, or do you like the old one enough to make this repair investment?

If you want to tear into the re-wind mechanism-- You are going to need a good work bench, tools, and you will be working with a powerful re-wind spring

Let us know if you care to go deeper into this problem.

My Miele Carina Vacuum stopped working. Does it have a fuse that can be replaced that could be at fault here?

although it might have an internal fuse on this model, I dont think that will be the problem.

The miele cord rewinder has been known to have a small fault in it where the cord winder that actually retracts the cord onto will come apart from the electrical connection in the cord winder itself.

As most of these units have a 5 year warranty anyway, I suggest that you take it to your nearest miele dealer for a repair/replacement on the cord rewinder.

Good luck.

Miele just stopped working?

Hello,

When a Miele canister just stops working all of a sudden, it's usually a pretty clear indication that either you have a bad cord reel, or a bad switch. I would say that in 60% of Miele repairs that I do with this problem, the cord reel has gone bad.

One easy thing that you can try to see if the cord is bad, is put one hand on the on/off switch, and the other hand grab the cord (making sure it's fully retracted inside the canister). Now pull the cord out slowly with your one hand, while continously turning the switch on / off, on / off. Keep pressing the switch on and off while pulling on the cord. Usually if the cord reel has gone bad, then you may hear the vacuum attempt to start, or even turn on while you're pulling on the cord. The cord reels in Miele use a metal spring inside that makes connection with the rest of the vacuum. Over time this spring will start to loose it's strength, and eventually will get so bad that it no longer makes contact with the rest of the vacuum. By pulling the cord out slowly and pressing the on / off switch, a lot of the times the spring will make connection somewhere, and the motor may turn on temporarily.

If this happens, this indicates your cord reel needs to be replaced. I have done a detailed repair here on Fixya on how to replace the cord on a Miele canister vacuum that you may read here;
http://www.fixya.com/support/t2281026-miele_s514_will_not_come

If you can't get the vacuum to turn on at all, this can only mean a few things. First the cord reels spring is gone completely, and wont make any connection with the rest of the vacuum, and you'll still need to replace it.

It also can mean that just the plug that plugs into the wall is bad, is your plug bent, or no longer straight on either prong?

It can also mean that your motor has gone bad. This however is usually the least likely of all the problems. The Miele motors are almost bullet proof, and typically last 20 years. I can count on one hand the number of Miele motor replacements I've ever done in 10 years of fixing vacuums.

I can try and help you diagnosis this further if my suggestions didn't help you. Please use the clarification request that you see here on this page to ask me a question. Please just let me know what happened when you tested the cord out as I suggested above. I really hope this was helpful to you. If you found this to be helpful, please be sure to rate the repair as helpful to you by clicking the thumbs up icon. I really appreciate that.

Have a miele S546 vac. and it won't turn on. Is there a fuse? Can the on/off switch burn out? Thanks.

If you vacuum wont turn on it is most likely the cord winder. This is a pretty big repair, you wouldn't want to attempt it yourself. Most shops should be able to repair the cord winder for about $50-75. If you need a new cord winder expect to pay about $150.

Miele s314 red star-motor stopped working-on/off switch broken?

Most likely the problem is with the cord winder. This is the most common problem with Mieles. It is actually the most common problem with any vacuum with a cord winder. A Miele repair center should not change you to look at the vacuum and tell you what is wrong with it. The Red Star was a great model and if the powerhead is still in goood condition I would get the vacuum repaired. If it is the cordwinder they can usually be repaired and it should cost about $75.00. If you need a new cord winder this will cost about $150.00. The top piece can be pryed off, however if it feels like it is switching than it is not jammed.
