I just updated my system codecs and added WinDVD (To play some DVD's, obviously) and now when I try to play back any file containing audio, using WIndows Media Player 11, there is no sound. Video plays on any format (ie. AVI, MPG etc) but without the sound. System sounds play fine, game audio plays fine even online videos (ie. UTube etc) with audio is fine. I've done the updates, I've updated the driver and even checked the settings so that WMP plays ALL audio/video files. Still no sound. Any helpfull ideas? Thanks in advance.

I recently re-installed windows xp home into my laptop and now when i try to play music i get this error message.Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly. I cant even adjust the volume controles. There is no speeker icon in the toolbar tray. All the troubleshooting does is confuse me. I am not sure what driver should be in use either.

Hi,

I have an Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D7830. I was updating chipsets to the laptop when it bluescreened. I had to reformat the HDD and reinstalled Windows Xp Pro SP2. Since then I have installed every conceivable Windows Update file there is and have updated all other drivers and chipsets. However, my soundcard is no longer working.

When clicking on the device in question in the device management screen, the following error messages are displayed for the Realtek AC'97 soundcard: This device cannot start. (Code 10), PCI bus 0, device 31, function 5.

I have attempted at downloading and installing almost every drive I can find for this device, and have followed the standard Microsoft help routines. i.e. uninstalling the device and reinstalling the device still with no luck.

I hope you will be able to assist, as my last resort will be to take it into the a techie shop i.e. PC World for them to have a look at it.

Kind regards,

Sean

How to play wmv files

Windows Media Video, or WMV files, is a type of video that can be played on your computer and portable media players. In the past, computer users have been known to have difficulties opening these files due to a flaw in Windows Media Player or the WMV file. These issues have since been resolved with the newer versions of Windows Media Player and other similar media players. WMV files should now open and play with ease.

Begin by downloading the latest version of Windows Media Player (see link in Below). http://www.filewin.net/Windows-Media-Player/download/?p=AU-DNM Windows Media Player is the default player for Windows Media Video files. If you have just purchased a new computer, the computer probably already has the latest version of the program. Right click on the WMV file you want to play. Select "Open With." Several different programs will appear in a small box. Choose "Windows Media Player." Windows Media Player will then open on your computer. Wait for the WMV file to load. When it does, a message may appear in Windows Media Player informing you that the WMV file is missing an extension. Click "Yes" and Windows Media Player will still attempt to load the file. The WMV file should then begin playing in Windows Media Player. Hope this helps.

Windows media player 11wont play backtrack line 6marked files

Go to Filehippo.com and download and istall K-Lite Codec Pack 5.90 (Full) it should beef up your windows media player to accommodate most codec's.

If that doesn't do the job, again from filehippo, download and install VLC Media Player.

Both programmes are freeware.

In the windows media player go to > now playing - more options - devices - speakers then changed the audio device to use your soundcard.

Also, uninstall any other players, they usually interfere with each other.

If you are able to hear sound while starting PC issue is not with sound card. that is installed and working properly. If you are clicking on any file that is not playing then window media player is not supporting that file. If you are directly opening window media player from start>>Program>>access>>>>window player and it is giving error. It mean that your player is corrupted. You can upgrade that with higher version of player by going this link. www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx
