Is Toshiba Satellite M35-S456 Worth Fixing Noisy Fan and DVD I/O error?

My Toshiba M35-S456 is four years old and now out of warranty. These problems were contant during the four years and when serviced only calmed down for a few weeks at a time. First of all the fan is extremely noisy. Sometimes it even clanks. After service it will be quiet for about one month but then it starts up again. The second problem is the Matshita UJ-810 DVD-Ram. I will only run, load, play, recognize certain disks. All others now get an I/O error message and will not open. You can see the icon for a few seconds and it whirs, but then all goes quiet. I have searched threads and gotten advice in other forums but nothing has helped. Is this computer worth sending in to be fixed AGAIN (now at my expense) or are these repearing problems a curse of the machine?

I did seem nunconventional but after two hours I turned on the laptop and it was definitely quiet. Unfortunately the DVD Rom still says there is an I/O error regardless of the DVD or CD I try to use.

I took out the computer and still do not hear any fan at all. Does that mean I probably at the very least need a new fan?

The machine was quite costly four years ago. The screen is large and beautiful. If a new fan will quiet it down it will be much better. It's been twenty minutes outside the refrig and still no sound coming from within. Has the loud beast been defeated or at least temporarily numbed?

Now about that I/O error message. . . any ideas?

It does sound like the problems you have could be largely down to the fan not running freely and allowing the processor to run hot. There for a new fan unit may be required. However a little trick to find out if over heating is the problem. Place the lap top in to a refrigerator for a couple of hours then leaving it placed in the fridge with the door open see if it will operate normally while sitting in the fridge.
If it does then the over heating factor is confirmed there for a new fan unit will solve the problems. This somewhat unorthodox method has worked for me on more than one occasion Hope this helps

(Toshiba Satellite M35-S456) G-Force nVidia 5200 graphics card

To determine if your video card is faulty, connect an external monitor to the laptop, power up the monitor first and then the laptop.
The video data will automatically switch to the external monitor and if you see a normal image then the video card is OK and the fault maybe the video cable, it may need reseating.
If the image still has the strips, the same as the LCD screen then the fault is most likely the video card or video RAM..
On some laptops video RAM uses part of the main memory modules, reseat the RAM modules and if this doesn't fix the problem then the fault is the video card. This very difficult be fixed becaused it is part of the motherboard.

Have you tried to start in safe mode? (hold the f8 key while booting). This will allow you to go back to a boot sequence that worked. You will need to go to start and select restore. Could be under accessories
