When I was working on my laptop one day I accidently reformatted my computer. It still worked. Later I bought a new memory module, it did not fit so I put the it had back in the slot. I then upgraded and installed Windows Vista. It worked only for a short time. Now when I turn on my computer it doesn't do anything. It gets as far as to where it asks you how you want to start your computer and then all I get is a blank screen. What do I need to do to get it working again.
Re: My laptop turns on but then I get a blank screen.
Put in your windows vista CD and boot the PC. It will boot from the CD and you should be able to select a recovery/repair option. Otherwise I believe you can reinstall windows without loosing your data.
You really should backup your data and do a clean install of Vista.

Hi, Turn off the computer and open the side cover by removing two screws. If you have a video card remove it and clean the connectors with alcohol and also the memory card connectors. Re install it and install it back the side cover and turn the power that should work for you. Get back to us if this information helps you solve the problem. Good day...
I might advise you reformat the operating system of the computer, or check the peripheral devices for this computer if properly connected? You got a fatal error it means that there is something that is not reading by the memory of the computer.
Most likely your video card is broken. To check if the motherboard isnt broken either, I would suggest you test usb, sound, and other features of the motherboard.
If your motherboard isnt broken then you have to buy a "pci-e graphics card" at your local store. Shouldnt cost much, about $40-70. Hope that helps.
Perhaps you accidently triggered the external display only setting.
Try pushing <Fn> and <F5> at the same time. it may take a couple of presses. But if this is it that should switch the onboard display back on.
If this doesn't work, comment back here and I'll try to figure out the problem for you.
the resolution set by default when you load your graphics driver is outside the range of your monitors capability.
try starting in safe mode then adjust your resolution to 640 by 480 then restart.
if this works, adjust upwards to 1024 by 768
then up again till the screen blanks.
when it does, dont panic, wait 20 seconds and the settings will restore - you then have the optimum settings for your monitor.
To resolve the problem,do the following step,
1. Power on the system
2. At dell logo screen before windows xp starts to load tap on the F8 key slowly 5 to 8 times
3. Select safe mode
4 Hit enter on the next screen and logon using the administrator or your name
5. Do the system restore, when you have logged on, this would return your system back to the date when it was working fine
6. To system restore
click start>all programs>accessories>system tools >system restore
