Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

No spark on lawn tractor

The key has'nt turned my lawn tractor over all summer, so I've jumped It using the tractor battery, and thats kept a full charge. Last week I go to start It ( by Jumping ), no spark. I don't believe the 2 problems are related. I think the solenoid is keeping the key from working, but a bad solenoid won't keep me from getting a spark. I put on a differant laminate (coil ), new plug, NOTHING. It's in neutral, everything is disengaged, and don't forget, I TURNED this off the last time I used It, It did'nt just stop running. I even removed solenoid and cleaned mating surfaces with emory paper to be sure of ground. I think something is shorting out the spark or I've got a bad wire. How do I start checking wires? continuity? Thank Guys, Andy . Andrewdms2@gmail.com

    is there a fuse blown??

you should ohm out the ignition switch

how many wires on your ignition switch(if theres only 2 just connect them together and check for spark with the wires connected) and what color are they or do you know which wire goes to the starter solinoid, if you do put put power that wire and check for spark

    hope this helps

forget what about connecting the solinoid wire that would not help.

you should try and bypass the switch in the on position and check for spark that way

    sorry

Sold wrong battery and crossed terminals

I doubt that jim, but i don't know anyway quicker to kill a charged battery than to hook it up backwards to another battery (sparks you mentioned) try using a spare car light bulb to verify that battery is charged up , also look for inline fuse someplace close to the battery location, you might have blown that , continue using car bulb to "walk" thru circuit to verify presants of voltage (key/starter/dashlghts)

Craftsman 18.5hp new battery new solenoid will only crank one revalution then quit what next?

It could be several things !! well not the battry !! you can check that out from the list !! sounds like the starter is dragging, you can try to jump it off with a screw driver turn the key on and touch the two srews on the solenoid becareful cause its going to spark a little , check to see if it still drags or it fires right up !? if it drags and turns slow than its most likley your starter ,check and see if the starter geting real hot also ? thats one of the signs that its going out also ,

Jump solenoid with screwdriver

Turn key to run. Put screw driver to battery cable side while holding the plastic end of screw driver touch other end of screw driver to cable that goes to starter on solenoid and wjth full charge of battery you should have starter turning.

Turn key to run and nothing happens pops fuse

Those safety switches you mention above is a good first place to look. Possibly the magnetic switch that makes connection with the battery and the starter needs replaced. When you jumped the starter to turn the motor over did you have the key turned to ignition? No spark can come from a low oil shutdown switch located somewhere on the lower part of the engine (either low oil or bad switch), if the key was on. The switch can be bypassed to test its condition. Keep us posted.

I have an RZT50 Cub Cadet Mower that only starts with jump

it sounds like the starter motor is pulling to many amps for the battery to cope with. if its a 12v system it should not pull the battery down to less than 8.5 volts on cranking if it does the starter-motor is defective you can check this with a volt meeter across the battery terminals and see what it read as you crank the engine. hope this helps

Will not turn over w key NOW no spark

I hate to sound obvious, but if you are starting it by jumping it, than the problem may not lie in the circut or ignition, but it may be a battery problem. Have you checked the battery to make sure that is a full charge?
