Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Fried HD? I accidently plugged in a laptop power cord into my lacie 500 gb hd, and now it doesn't seem to power on at all. Really clueless on electronics... i hope its simple/easy ta fix? the laptop cord was  INPUT:  100-240v ~2a, 50-60 Hz OUTPUT: 19V---6.32A MAX. (120W) while the HD cord is  INPUT: 100-240V -50-60HZ .08A OUTPUT: 12V --- 2A not completely sure that the HD burnt, as nothing noticeable happened..  i plugged it into the wrong cord for just a moment..  I'm hoping that the problem with the HD cord (which makes a slight buzzing sound when plugged in, that stops when connected to the HD)..  though i really dont think that it is the problem :/  any help/steps on opening/fixing HD (replacement parts?) thank you!!!

Yep, it's probably fried, a little too much juice went in.
While the drive itself might be ok, the external casing is another story.

Try opening the case and removing the HD and plugging that in on your PC directly as a slave drive.

WD My book flashing light

I think you have burn your power supply coord! Sometime powercoord have the same plug but the voltage are not the same laptop run sometime at 18v when hd is at 12v. On your HD look arround the power coord hole, you should be able to find wich voltage you need to operate it!

Freezes up During Backups

I suggest an application called "Disk Warrior" it has always maintained high ratings among us Mac enthusiasts it has a hardware test function built into it and seems to be a little better at verify and repair functions than Disk Utilities which you can try also if you haven't yet. You may also consider trying a different firewire cable if you have one handy. Other than that a reformat should have put the disk back into an original state however the disk could have been damaged by not un-mounting it in rare mac cases. If you have the time you can also reformat the disk again although I would try the first two options first.

Help! the green light flashes then nothing happens

The exact same thing just happened to me (WD elements 500 gig) and it's only about 10 months old. I called the customer help line (on the official website) and after they asked me what the serial number of my HD was they were going to send me a new power supply. Simple as that. They said they'd be able to send it out early next week. I'm hoping that the HD didn't get fried and it's just the power supply but what you've described is EXACTLY what is happening to mine.

LaCie drive won't turn on (blue light doesn't go on)

I doubt your hard drive is dead, even if your HD was dead the blue light would go one. It has to be the internal controller.. Your best bet is to get a HD enclosure and put your old drive in there. I've burned through 3 Lacie cases, all with similar problems..

I think I fried my LACIE 500gb drive

Sadly if you fried the drive with that PSU cord it would be pretty hard for a home repair. If you know its definatly dead, I would just remove the drive from the external unit and try to connect it internally to a computer. If the adaptor is different you could buy a cheapy online somewhere.
