Frigidaire Side-By-Side Refrigerator Leaks Water on Floor

A couple times a day, water is in the front of my refrigerator. First I noticed a sound coming from the fridge like a hose spewing water. Then i noticed water accumulating on the floor in the front of the fridge. Also, on the bottom in the inside of the freezer, there is ice on the bottom shelf(The bin is stuck to the ice). What are the causes of these problems? Is this all related?

Thanks

I thought the spewing/spraying sound I hear is a tube? The spraying water is coming from underneath the fridge. I will try your solution.

The water isn't going into the tray. So now what can I do?

  • SpicyC30 Oct 27, 2008

There is water on the bottom of the freezer flowing out and ice. But most of it is coming from somewhere under the unit creating a large puddle of water on the floor. It accumulates quickly, like in seconds. There is also condensation on the refridgerator door.

One thing I noticed is when I looked in the back of the bottom in the freezer(behind the basket), there is a wire coil like looking thing that turns red at times. Water( coming from in the freezer) was dripping down on the coil. Is this all related?

    Where is the tube?

I don't have the same refrigerator, but had a similar issue with a GE. Melt the ice at the bottom of the freezer. I think the water comes from the auto defrost feature. There should be a hole at the back bottom of the freezer that water would go into, and run to an evaporator pan under the refrigerator. The tube may be blocked that allows this water to drain, so it is backing up in the bottom of the freezer, and overflowing through the front bottom of the freezer to your floor.

I don't think the spraying noise is water spraying from a tube - I suspect it is the sound that the auto-defrost cycle makes. Check the evaporator tray under the fridge to see if it has water in it (or instead looks like Mars - maybe had water a long time ago). Check the tray for cracks/leaks.

Need more facts. Is the water coming from inside the bottom of the freezer, and flowing out the front of the freezer? Was there a pool of ice at the bottom of the freezer?

Seems like two alternatives - either the water is not passing through the tube and draining from the front of the freezer (check for blockage), or the water goes down the tube, but tube does not drain into the evaporator pan. Which is the problem? I'd bet blockage.

If blockage - first suspect would be ice at the top of the tube - pour a cup of hot water on the inlet hole. Or go high tech, and fill your turkey baster with hot watter and squirt it into the hole. If not ice, try reaming it out with a coat hanger wire (gently, don't puncture the tube).

Maybe under the ice? Would normally be at the lowest point in the bottom of the freezer, but there could be a little ledge at the back wall of the freezer in the bottom that is supposed to catch the water before it gets to the bottom. If you need more help, look up the parts manual for your model, and look at the exploded view diagram so that you can see where ther tube runs from.

If you have the same problem as I have, the plastic tube has a hole in it. I just pulled off the back insulation panel and ran it to find that the tube has a small pin hole. It's leaking through my floor into the basement. By the looks of it, it's been doing it for a while as the hardwood floor has lifted. Now I just need to figure out how to fix it.

Water is leaking on floor from left hand front corner (freezer side) I noticed it does it on the right hand corner at times also

On my fridge like this one, on the freezer side, down at the bottom (below the doors, where the vents are, there's a turn knob there. If you turn it counter clockwise, it'll unscrew filter. It's white and about 2" round and 10" long. It's the filter that goes to the water supply and ice maker. Mine had stopped up, I just pulled it out, went to home depot and got another just like it and re-plugged it in.. No more leaks for me!

The Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator, model ED2KVEXVQ01 occassionally leaks water onto the floor. There could be a cup or more of water, but the problem has occurred a few times, but may go weeks or...

sometimes we overload our refrigerators and the doors will not close properly, next time you notice the water see if your doors are closed tightly and the seals engaged tightly. My wife has this habit of not checking after she has put away the remains of a big dinner or BBQ and I find drips of condensate water all over the floor as a result. The defrost collection pan overfills and the excess water goes on the floor. once the doors are closed properly the problem goes away.

Water leaks from below the fridge a couple times a day?

There are several sources of water from within your refrigerator. The most likely source for the frequency you are experiencing, "couple of times a day", is the defrost system.

When your refrigerator defrosts, a heater that surrounds the evaporator piping behind the freezer back wall comes on which melts the frost on the coils causing the water to run into a drain below the evaporator. This drain can clog up with foreign particles accumulating in the drain. The clogging can cause the drain to spill over into the floor of the freezer and run out the door along the bottom of the freezer door through the door seal. This will usually leave an ice sheet on the floor of the freezer. If you do not have an ice sheet...the drain is not clogged.

The second method by which water ends up on the floor is a broken pan beneath the refrigerator intended to catch the water as it leaves the drain in the freezer. To test this, use a turkey baster and pump water into the freezer drain at the rear bottom of the freezer behind the wall using the holes in the wall. Watch under the refrigerator to see where the water ends up.

Performing these actions will lead you to the solution.

Water leaking underneath refrigerator/water freezing in bottom of freezer

I'm dealing with the same problem right now with the same refrigerator. The cold water tank (for the front dispenser) has a hole in it that leaks every time someone dispenses water from the front door. You will find the water tank behind the top slide-out drawer in the fridge. The leaked water flows down one of the water tubes through a hole in the bottom of the fridge and onto the floor. I'll bet you have the same problem. Good Luck.
