I made sure the battery was in correctly and I removed the little tape that was covering the connectors. I chaged the cam coder up and it was blinking to show that it was definitely charging. When it was fully charged I pressed the power button right after I took it off the charge and it came on perfectly. I waited an hour later and pressed the power button and got nothing.

I took mine apart and there's a little switch on the backside of the camera that controls the opening of the cassette mechanism. It is meant to be tripped by the opening of the side of the cassette case and then triggers the ejection of the tape. The switch is probably just stuck. Taking this apart isn't too difficult - I think about 4 screws.

Steps for removing the tape from a totally dead ZR85:
1. Turn camera upside down.
2. Move "Open/Eject" button to full right position (toward lens).
3. Manually push tape door open.
4. On the metal surface that sits between you and the tape, there is a very small screw. There is probably a yellow sticker next to the screw that says "Do not press on this part". With a small jewelry phillips screwdriver, remove that screw.
5. Push the metal plate (with tape) in the direction ofr the door and lift slightly. The metal assembly holding the tape comes loose, exposing the top of the tape.
6. Pull the tape upwards (out of the camera). At this point, the tape will still be engaged in the play heads. With the cartridge out far enough to see the heads, reach in with your jewelry screw driver and carefully lift the tape over the heads, and free from the camera.
7. Use the eraser on the end of a pencil to wind your tape back into the cartridge.
8. When re-assembling the mechanism in the camera, there are two curved slots on both sides of the piece you took loose. You'll need to thread these onto two posts inside before you place the top back in position and put the screw back in.

I took the camera to the representative and we started various tests such as:
Tried My battery in OTHER camera .... not working
Tried OTHER battery in MY camera .... works
Tried charging MY battery in OTHER Camera .... works
Tried MY battery in MY camera and charged .... worked
Bottom end is that my charger is not working although it heats when "charging".
Now i will look at the pins in the charger to see if they are working or not.
Whatever the case .... getting a new charger.

I've just received mine today from Argos Clearance Bargains (http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/argos-clearancebargains/) and had the same problem. I was already compoisng a strong complaint in my mind. Anyway I tried the reset method. Remove battery; open LCD screen;hold in reset buttona few seconds; reconnect battery; set to "off" and eject .... out popped a very dirty DVD-RW.
When I reinsterted it the problem recurred and I solved it the same way. I have now permenently removed the offending DVD and the cover opens and closes fine. I will buy some fresh DVDs this weekend and see if the problem returns.
Watch this space and also let me know how you get on,
