Question about Acer PC Desktops

I don't have much sound comming from my speakers. I have to turn them all the way up in order to hear.

No sound at all emitted through the speakers even though i see the spectral display of sound on the desktop player indicating that music is playing.


Do your speakers require power? If so are they powered? You can tell just by hearing static/noise when you disconnect the speakers connector and plug it back in.

If they are not powered, are you sure you are plugged into the correct port on the PC? It will have 2 half circles with an arrow pointing outward.

If none of the above work, try plugging the speakers into something else to see if they work, like a CD player, or cell phone (if you have a new one with RCA output). This will check and see if the speakers are actually working or not.

Some Dell PCs don't have speakers if you don't order them.

Does the sound work on a headset? I just use a headset on my Dell.

Speaker wires are pluged in on my dell inspiron 530 but not working help


    • 1 Make sure that your computer and speakers are plugged in, have power and are turned on. If the speakers are plugged in but don't appear to have any power, plug them into a different outlet. Some speakers are self powered and use a USB cable to supply power. Make sure that the USB cable of your speakers is connected securely to the USB port of your computer.
    • 2 Retest the sound. If you still don't have any sound, make sure the cable connecting the speakers to the computer (known as a 1/8-inch TRS cable) is plugged into the green audio output jack on the PC.
    • 3 If you're using self-powered USB speakers, remove the USB cable and plug it into a different USB port. If you're using outlet-powered speakers and have a working set handy, replace the suspected non-working speakers with the working pair to test.
    • 4 Navigate to the Microsoft Fix It troubleshooter (windows.Microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/no-sound-in-windows) to automatically detect and fix sound playback or hardware problems. If that doesn't work, proceed with the next step.
    • 5 If you have an add-on sound card and none of the hardware or software fixes helps, you may have to replace the sound card. If you use on-board sound, it will probably pay to purchase an inexpensive sound card rather than a new motherboard. Check the system BIOS to determine whether you have inadvertently disabled your on-board sound.
    • 6 Navigate to the "Start" menu and select the "Control Panel" and "Sounds and Audio Devices." Then click the "Volume" tab. If everything is grayed out, proceed to Step 7. If the "Mute" box is checked, uncheck it. In "Device Volume," make sure that your volume level is set to a comfortable volume level for your speakers.
    • 7 Click the "Sounds" tab. Under "Sound Scheme," determine whether "No Sounds" is selected. If it is, click "Sound Schemes." A drop-down list will appear. Select "Windows Default" as the scheme. To test your sound now, click on a sound listed below the "Program Events" window. The sounds will be indicated by a small "Speaker" icon located next to them. Left-click the sound once, then click the "Play" button. If you still don't hear sound, proceed with the next step.
    • 8 Click the "Audio" tab. Under the "Sound Playback" option, make sure your sound card is selected as the default playback device. Usually, only one device appears here, unless you have multiple playback devices installed.
    • 9 If everything is grayed out, you either do not have a playback device installed or your drivers are corrupted and need to be replaced. Drivers help hardware and software function together. Fix this by reinstalling the appropriate drivers. Do this by navigating to the "Start" menu and right-clicking "Computer." Then select "Properties" from the drop-down menu. Click the "Hardware" tab and then click the "Device Manager" button. The Device Manager will open.
    • 10 Look for either a red X or a yellow question mark listed under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers." If a red X appears, right-click the device with the X and select "Enable" from the pop-up menu. Test your sound at this point. If a yellow question mark appears, right-click the device, click "Properties" from the pop-up menu, and then click the "Driver" tab on the window that appears. Next, click the "Roll Back Driver" button to roll back to the previous drivers that were functioning correctly. Restart your computer when prompted.
    • 11 As a last resort, you can uninstall and reinstall the device. To do this, right-click the device and select "Uninstall" from the pop-up menu. Restart your computer. Windows will automatically detect and install your audio device upon boot-up. If you still don't hear any sound from your computer speakers, contact a qualified computer technician.

How do I connect speakers


to connect speakers: You look at the back of your computer, there will be several small holes, most are color coded. the green hole is the output for speakers.
there is usually also a small arrow pointing away from the hole, this is the icon for OUTPUT. Other holes will have an icon for INPUT and for microphones.
If you have trouble seeing these things, you can just plug your speakers into the first hole. Goto YouTube and play a video, If you hear sound you have the right output. If no sound, try the speakers in the next hole. Continue until you hear the sound. ( this will not hurt the computer or the speakers )
NOTE: make sure the volume is turned UP on the speakers and the volume is turned UP on the computer.

My hp tower has a built in speaker how do I turn it off. I just want to hear sound from my speaks not the built in speaker


You have 2 options.
The easy one is: double click on the audio device at the task manager in order to open the audio mixer, try to locate the (internal) speaker slider and slide it all the way down. If the speaker slider is not viewable choose option and try to locate it at the new window in order to enable it and come viewable and then change it's volume. If the above method prove not to work you have to follow the hard way.
Open up the case. Locate near the front side of the tower the built in speaker. It has one pair of cables that are connected with a small plastic connector at the motherboard. Unplug the connector; maybe there is a clip in order to unlock the connector, use a small screwdriver with care not do make any damage at the motherboard. Close the tower and enjoy the sound from your speakers without the interference of the internal speaker.

No sound on dell dimension 4700c


There can be more than one reason, why the computer can't play any sounds. These are discussed below:

If you have a desktop computer, it may or may not have a separate sound card. But in case of laptops, the sound card is integrated into the motherboard and cannot be removed, so some of the solutions may not apply to laptops. Also, new laptops come with built-in speakers, so the external speakers and cabling problems may not apply here, unless you use external speakers or headphones.

So, where do you start, when you can’t hear any sounds from your computer?

Before we start with the solutions, did you try the simplest solution first? Rebooting or restarting the computer is the simplest solution and should be tried first. If you didn’t already reboot, try it now. The sounds may just work after a reboot.

Can you hear the Windows startup sounds from the computer? If you can hear the Windows startup sounds, the sound card is working fine. If you can’t hear any startup sounds, enable the System Sounds in the Control Panel, if they are disabled. If you aren’t able to enable the system sounds and they are grayed out, you may need to install the sound driver.

Are you trying to play an audio CD, and not getting any sound? If you can hear the System Sounds, but can’t hear anything from the audio CD, even though your audio player software tells that it’s playing the disc, the problem is most likely with the digital cable that goes from the CD/DVD driver to the sound card (or to the motherboard).


One side of this cable goes into the back of the CD/DVD drive and the other goes into the sound card or on to the motherboard (in case of motherboards with built-in sound).

Are the speakers connected to the proper sound port / jack, at the back of the computer? Are they powered ON? External speakers generally have a separate power adapter, which plugs into the wall socket or any other power source. Is the speaker volume control, set to a comfortable level? If not, turn it to the middle position.

If in doubt, test your speakers by connecting them to another sound device like CD/DVD player or a radio/tape player, or any sound source. If you can hear sounds from the speakers, they are fine.

Check that the speaker pin is connected to the green jack on the back of the computer. Also, check that the sound (check speaker icon in the system tray) isn’t muted. Such a simple thing, which can happen accidentally, can confuse some people when they can’t hear sounds from their computers. This can get overlooked because the speaker icon may be lost between many other icons. Click it and un-mute the sound, if it’s muted.

Note: If you can’t see the speaker icon in the system tray, you may need to enable it from the Control Panel. From the Control Panel, double-click “Sound and Audio Devices” and check the box that says “Place volume icon in the taskbar” and click OK.

Try plugging in a pair of headphones in place of the speakers, to check whether you can hear anything. Play a song or music CD or any sound file, which you may have on the computer. If you don’t have one handy, you can run a command to test your sound:

Click the Start button, and then click Run (or Search, in Windows 7 / Vista). Type the following command and then press the Enter key: dxdiag

Click on the ‘Sound’ tab to see the details of your sound card. You can also test your sound card from this tab. Note the name of the sound card and the manufacturer, on a piece of paper.

If you can’t see the name of the sound driver, or aren’t able to hear the sound by using the ‘Test DirectSound’ button, or you get an error, the problem may be with the sound driver. If the sound worked sometime ago and now it isn’t working for some reason, the simplest solution for re-installing the sound driver is to do a System Restore. Restore the system to a date that you know, when your sound worked. Check out the following links for a short tutorial on System Restore

Note: Current documents, files and e-mail are not affected by System Restore. If you get an error like “Restoration Incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored“, undo the last action by selecting “Undo my last restoration”.

If System Restore didn’t help or you get a message that System Restore couldn’t be completed, try the following:

Start the Device Manager (Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc and hit the Enter key). In Device Manager, Click the + sign next to “Sound, video and game controllers”. See that the sound driver that you noted from dxdiag above, is listed.

Doube-click this sound driver. Device Manager should give a status message that the driver is working fine. If the driver isn’t there or if it shows a yellow exclamation mark, shows under other devices, or gives any other kind of status message, reinstall the driver. In any case, it doesn’t harm to uninstall and reinstall the driver.

From this sound driver properties page, you may also click the Troubleshoot button, to open the Sound Troubleshooter in the Windows Help and Support Center.

I can listen to sound using my earphones on my Dell Optiplex GX520 but cannot hear anything through the internal speakers otherwise. How do I turn them on?


the internal speaker is only for beeps. These beeps are constant or short and only happen when the computer is trying to tell you how its about to die lol.

Buy some speakers. I would highly recommend a 2.1 system from logitech.

No sound comming from audio volume


First check if you have the speakers pin (green) connected in tothe proper green socket on the back of the computer.

If yes, then right click on the sound / speaker icon that is near to your clock on the right bottom, and click "Adjust audio properties"

Now click the sounds tab in the audio properties.

Select any sound from the list under program events, and click the play button near the browse button. It should play a sound.

If you are not able to hear any sound BUT the play icon changes to the stop icon for a few  moments, it means the sounds play alright but something is wrong with the speakers or the connections.
