After replacing hard drive, computer wont stay on long enough to use recovery disk

I replaced the hard drive. I must admit that the Laptop has been sitting unused for a year along with the hard drive that Toshiba sent to replace the damaged one. I put in the recovery disk and to my dismay it said starting Windows 98. Well I thought I would just complete the process and update but the laptop will not stay on long enough for me to complete. The longest it stayed on was when I first started the process. The progress got to 10% before it shouts down. Each time I turn it back on, the stay on time is shorter.

Am I out of my element here? Do I need to take it to a professional or can someone help me?

Can I use a Dell cd to reinstall the operating system.

Yes, I turned it back on everytime it shut down, and finally stopped after three tries. I turned it back on after being off about 30 minutes and that was when it got to 10 percent complete. I left it off since I last posted but left it plugged in. I have now turned it back on and it got to 16 percent complete this time. What about the battery? Would not being used for more than a year contribute to this problem.

Thanks for all your help. I left it plugged in overnight and it completed the format. I believe the battery was the problem. Thanks Joed911! Your suggestion for taking out the battery and run of fthe AC would have solved the problem.

Thanks Fix Ya Team! I tried other forums but you have to wait so long for a response!

Did you try turning it back every time it shut down? It's possible that the CPU was overheating and causing it to shutdown. Everytime you turned it on, the CPU had less time to cool down and therefore shut down quicker. Just wanted to check before suggesting anything.

You can not use a Dell cd, but if your XP license is on the bottom of the laptop, you can use a Win XP cd (borrow one from a freind) to reinstall the OS.

Take the battery out and just run it off the AC adapter. See what happens then.

Laptop won'y start up has non-system disk or disk error

The error PXE-E61: Media test failure usually means the hard diskhas failed or the hard disk needs re-seating or the disk controller is faulty.First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

f you laptop was not supplied with a Windows CD then most likely the hard disk on your laptop has a recovery partition on the hard drive and you can restore your laptop back to the condition when you first purchased the laptop using this recovery partition.
Acer can also supply a recovery CD for your model laptop if you request one. This is needed when the hard disk has failed.
Read your laptop documentation for the instruction on the restore procedure. You also get this information from Acer's WEB site.

Open the enclosure.
Separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can read the files.

If not, search online for a professional 'data recovery service' -- for a FEE, they can repair a disk-drive just long-enough to copy your files onto a new disk-drive.

The disk-drive has malfunctioned.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service".
For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive,
just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

Green light wont stay on on memorex traveldrive

The light signals a connection between the hard disk inside the Traveldrive to its case. If it fails that means that the hard disk is dead. The unit has died, junk it and buy a new one, hard disks can't be repaired.

My laptop no longer recognizes my external hard drive. Device Manager gives me an error code 10.

Connect the Maxtor to a different computer, to see if the device works in some other computer.

If the warranty is still valid, exercise the warranty to get a replacement.

If the warranty has expired, disassemble the casing, and disconnect the USB-to-disk-drive interface from the disk-drive.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some other computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive interface is the part that failed.

If all else fails, search online for commercial "data recovery services" -- for a large amount of money, they will disassemble the disk-drive, repair it, just long-enough to copy your files.

Gateway NV5214u doesn't boot

I'm sorry to have to tell you this but it sounds like your hard drive has gone bad. If you bought this as a factory refurbished unit you can go to gateway.com for help with a replacement hard drive, I can't promise how much help you'll get.
Otherwise, you can buy a replacement hard drive from one of several online computer parts sellers. The problem is that you'll have to replace the operating system unless you have a recovery disk. If you don't have a recovery disk be sure to order an OS at the same time or you'll end up buying the more expensive retail version. Estimated cost of doing it yourself $175-$300 depending on OS and hard drive choices.
If your not knowledgeable enough in computers to change the hard drive and install the OS yourself then take it to a friend that is, taking it to a repair shop will most likely cost you more than it's worth.
I hope this is helpful.

Toshiba Satellite A105 s4254 Wont Boot Recovery Disk

You most likely have a bad hard drive. I would replace the hard drive and run a recover disk to put your laptop back to it factory condition. if you don't have a recovery disk you can get one at one of the sites below.
