98 gmc sierra z71 4x4 extended cab 5.7 v8. I have replaced thermostat, water pump, temp switch for the gauge and flushed the system, now it takes about 5 minutes and the gauge to go to 260 but the radiator is not hot and i cant find any leaking antifreeze anywhere.
You might want to check the wires going to the temperature sensor on the engine make sure it hasnt rubbed the protective coating off, this can give you a false reading, the safest way is to put a manual gauge in place of the temperature sensor and run engine to make sure the engine is not overheating. You can pick up a cheap manual temp gauge at your local parts store and install the temperature probe into the hole where the temp sensor was located and run the engine. It sounds like you have a guage malfunction. But is better to be safe than sorry.
Tahnk you very much this worked it is now running about 140 to 150 for the temp.

what caused the immediate problem did it lose fluid or what when did it start over heating
it started overheating no loss of fluid radiator and resivor were still full when it started getting hot we replaced the thermostat which was stuck half open now the gauge is reading hot but i can touch the radiator and the cap and it is not hot.
is it just the factory gauge or is it an actual gauge that the end screws in the block?
screws in the block
also try to take the cap be careful when doing that then start truck up and see if water starts boiling out or what also check to see if there either oil in the radiator or if thers water in the oil
well if ther is no oil in the radiator and no water in the oil your gauge might be bad if you or anyone you know has a digital thermometer with the little laser pointer just use that and that will tell you if your gauge is actually working if not maybe just get a new gauge
thanks for all the advice problem was fixed with a manual temp gauge. Turns out I was getting false reading now the truck is running at about 150 temp. Thanks again.
