Re: old ge dishwasher
I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.
Your problem is: there isnt any water going to your dishwasher and its just making a humming noise when you turn it on
The most likely culprit is the solenoid valve. It is a simple on/off valve under the d/w on the left. Depending on make and model I might remove the d/w from the cabinet to facilitate installation. Don't forget to turn off the water first.

At the bottom of the dishwasher remove the kick panel . Then turn on the dishwasher , and then locate the water inlet valve , it should be on the left hand side with hose going to it . the pipe might be copper or plastic or stainless steel . listen for a humming noise . If you hear a humming noise . there is no water getting to the unit . make sure the hose is not kinked and the water is turned on and clean the screen on the valve . if there is no humming it is bad water valve . ( cleaning the water valve ) remove the incoming water line and remove the screw that holds the valve in . Then remove the 90 degree fitting on the bottom . you will see the screen .
I had the same problem. The issue is due to the top rack water inlet not properly seating against the water line in the rear of the washer. I fixed it by placing heavier items (bowls, glass cups) on the rear of the rack and lighter items (plastic cups) near the front of the rack. As long as I arrange items on the top rack in this way the washer runs silently.
No model and brand name .
the way you mention look like the main motor jammed and making the humming noise click out on overload then the humming noise stop and after a while it will humming again and continue like that until you switch off the machine. If the dishwasher is old I would recommand you buy a new one instead of changing the motor. God Bless have a nice day Dickson
