He is correct on the location however it sounds weird to hear CRT's referred to as bulbs. I do hope you know what you are doing. Changing CRT's is not an easy job. Be aware there is coolant in these sets and disassembling the set improperly could cause fluid to poor out onto the circuit boards. Also, there is high voltages that may still linger even if the set is unplugged. Even if you know all this and can change it successfully, you may need equipment to align it. Just curious, how do you know it is bad?

If you take the front cover off and look at the bulbs, you will be able to tell which one is the red bulb. Looking at the front of the TV, the red shhould be on the left. If you need a red bulb, I have one that works fine.

The service manual on page 8 shows how to adjust the Red/Blue/Green screen voltages. To get to the adjustment board, take the front speaker grill off (two screws at the bottom left and right) and set it aside. No need to disconnect any wires. Then remove the plywood board with 4 screws that exposes the screen/focus adjustments. The top 3 adjustments are for focus, and you need not mess with these. The bottom 3 adjustments are for Red/Blue/Green screen voltage rough adjustments. My screen showed red lines, so I had to turn the bottom right adjustment with a philips head screwdriver just slightly until the red gun retrace lines where no longer visible.

It sounds like your red tube is going out. Fairly expensive piece but easily replaced. They run anywhere from $250-$350.

Sony KP-51HW40

I had the same problem with mine 2 years ago (TV was 1.5 years old at that time) I had extended warranty on TV and it was fixed by Sony at no cost to me. Now yesterday I have another problem with it. All of a sudden screen went BLUE. No Sound either. It could be the CRT (That's what I read here) Out of luck this time. Will call local Repair shop (70 miles away) and see how much it will cost to fix it. Good luck.
