That really depends on where you send it.
This type of repair should not cause you to lose your information BUT a lot of the manufacturers do not simply fix your computer and send it back to you. Instead they will send you a refurbished computer of the same make and model, then when there is time they will repair your computer, reimage the hard drive and then send it to the next person who needs a repair. This makes the turn-around time much faster and what you get is a computer that is the way it was when you bought it.
If you take it to a local shop there is less chance of this happening.
ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR DATA, no shop, repair depot or manufacturer will be responsible for or guarantee the safety of your data.

Alternative Solution: You mention your modem went out, this also applies to network adapters and wireless - if your computer is out of warranty, it is probably much cheaper for you to buy and external adapter that fits in a USB port.

Hi
It totally depends on what you need to be repaired.
For example, if your hard drive has fried, the engineer will replace it and you will lose everything.

If it is just the modem that is faulty. you'll be ok. The best thing to do is remove your hard drive before you send your Pavilion for repair, or back up ALL your data.
If you have cherished data on your computer it's a good idea to regularly back up anyway.

Incidentally, how do you know the modem itself is faulty? There are numerous things that can make it look like a modem has gone wrong. Some can be fixed in minutes...

Any time you take (or even more so, send) a PC for repair of any sort, you should have a complete backup of your system. No repair service guarantees - in fact they specifically tell you they are not responsible for the loss of - your data. So, while it is not typical that the repair tech would intentionally erase anything from your system, it is important to be aware of a very high possibility of losing your data - particularly if there is shipping involved, etc. At any rate, the importance of a good, solid full backup can not be overemphasized!

If this information assists you in resolving the problem, please take a moment to rate the solution at a "FixYa" level. If you do not feel that you can rate at a "FixYa", please post back with more information regarding what has occurred subsequently and/or more details regarding the situation, and I will gladly help you until we have reached a definitive solution. Acer travelmate 2303wlmi wifi button use to show wireless enable and disable logos when pushed now it just shows no device and launch manager is installed

Hey CONGRATULATIONS!

DAD!

"drivers obtained from acer own support site for acer travelmate 2300
then checked with a driver updater which reported that iv got the latest
drvers for my system"

Not trying to sound like Mr.Negative here but;

1) http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=761

Wireless LAN Driver/Ambit/2.10.03.2004/784.4 KB/ 12/02/2008

That the one? So am I to assume you went to your Device Manager, and in Network Adapters, you found Ambit was the wireless module, manufacturer?

No? Doesn't say?
Then remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery. (Laptop off, and closed, 'natch)
Turn the laptop over, bottom side up, Battery Compartment facing away from you.

Open the Memory Compartment/Wireless Modem Compartment.
(Middle panel, two Philips head screws at bottom, rectangular slotted vent at bottom/right corner. Lift the panel up on the screw side )

Remove the Ram Memory modules, ('Stick')
What is the manufacturers name on the wireless modem?
Is it Ambit?

Or is it Atheros, or Intel?

Ambit wireless modem for a Sony laptop, used for an example,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ambit-t62m159-00-56k-modem-for-Sony-Laptops-/220587575036?pt=US_CD_DVD_Blu_Ray_Drives&hash=item335c0b46fc

It's upside down, but see Ambit?

2) How,....did you install? I want to know the procedure you used to INSTALL. A lot of people think that just downloading a driver, is the way to go. You have to install it also.

3) Never put much stock in the entities, that claim to know if you have all of the best drivers installed.

Had one that stated I had the best driver for my ATI graphics card, installed, but was so full of it, I can't begin to start...........

4) Service Pack 3. SP/3 has caused so many problems it isn't funny.

5) Physically see if the Wireless Modem's cables are plugged to it, (Or screwed)
I would remove the cables, (Make a MARK on each cable {Wire}, and a matching mark on the modem), and clean their connectors.
I would also do the same for the terminals on the wireless modem

Use a solid pencil eraser, and use air to remove the eraser dust, afterward.

{Cables, (Wires), MUST go back to the terminals on the Wireless Modem, that they belong to }

Would appreciate your results back in a Comment.
(When you get time, of course!)

I have acer aspire one without a modem

Hello there,

You say you dont have a modem....but you want to connect via dial up?

Well ok, you need to do the following:

1. Contact an ISP (people like Virgin, Tiscali, TalkTalk, etc etc etc)
2. Sign up for the package you want.
3. They will send you a modem. It wont be for dial up but broadband.
4. Connect it and off you go.

However, if you REALLY want to use the internet using dial up you will have to go find an old cheap dial up modem.
BT, Tiscali and a few others do let you use a pay per min rate for dial up, but their is no one I know of that lets you get on line for nothing at all.

The only other service I have heared of was here:
http://www.connect4free.co.uk/
And even they charge 1p per min.

So if I were you.... go broadband as its faster and in the long run, cheaper.

If this has helped you please rate it so that I know.

Thank you.

When I power on my acer 5100 ot beeps three times and stays on.

Hello,

In a lot of laptops 3 beeps on post check during boot up means an issue with either internal memory or the memory sticks in the laptop. If you know how to take out the memory sticks that is the first thing to check. To do so locate the memory sticks. Before taking them out make sure you are in a as static free environment as you can be. Idealy you can use a wrist ground strap to ground yourself to the laptop to eliminate any possible static built up in your body from discharging into the memory stick and possibly damaging it but I have changed many and never used one an never had one fail.
I try to do it in a non carpeted room. Remove the battery and make sure it is of course unplugged. Also after unplugging and removing the battery I hit the power button so if there is any stored energy inside the motherboard it will discharge in a way. I have a sager with such huge capacitors in it it actually momentarily lights up the power on led when I do this so yes there can be trapped energy so I reccomend this step. There are two tabs on either side of the memory stick that you carefully push outward and this allows the stick to release (pop up) evenly pull it out of the socket. Using a clean eraser lightly rub the gold contacts to clean them if they seem dirty. Shouldnt be on a laptop that new but never know. Make sure no eraser residue is on the stick and put it back in the slot and push down till locks back into tabs.
Try booting up the laptop if this doesn't work try using only one of the two memory sticks at a time to test if only one of the two is bad. If this does not work than if it is a internal memory problem you will have to have it serviced.
If this does not solve it then you could try removing one at a time and booting after removing the wireless card, cd/dvd (optical drive), hard drive, modem or memory card reader board ect. ect. but some of these may take a bit more experience to remove for some.
I am only self taught at laptop repair but I am no rookie to electronics either so hope this helps.

BIOS PASSWORD

Taking out the battery does not work anymore. The bios password is now held in an electric erasable read only memory chip AKA (EEPROM). Its a little labor intensive process to erase this chip and I am not going to go into it here. But if you rate this fixya and post an E-mail address where I can send you contact info I will send you the info you are seeking and teach you.

Dell Inspiron B130 wont boot

First remove the battery from the PC! Leave it off for a short period of time! about 2min. This allows the computer to erase anything in temporary memory. Place the battery back onto th PC and try to boot it up. The other thing you can do is boot the pc up with just the power cord in place. See if it boots just from the power cord. Sometime the batteries from dell causes the whole entire PC to become unresponsive.

COMPAQ V5000 FAILURE

Hi, Try re-seating your memories. They may be located at the bottom of your laptop covered by a lid or panel held by a screw or 2. Once the memories are exposed, move the retaining clips slightly away from the memories moving sideways. The memory will slightly pop out and you can proceed to remove them. Use a pencil eraser to rub/clean on the little gold contact strips. Re-insert and lock in place. In some models the memories are underneath the keyboard. If this does not solve your problem, your next best move perhaps is to seek professional qualified services to diagnose/repair you laptop. In some instances, the repair could include video card or even memory replacement. Hop[t this be of some idea/help. Post back how things went or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
