I have a new 4 cubic feet refridgerator. It was given to my by a friend who decided he wanted a full size instead. He had it over a year and never took it out of the box so the warranty is over. It seems like the compressor is running,I took reading on the temp control. On off it is open, any other setting reads continuity. Is there a way to check the charge on refrigerant

I am assuming that by your post "...wont get cold..." you are referring to the entire unit, both the freezer and the fridge. Since the fridge is cooled by way of drawing air from the freezer/evaporator, it is the freezer that must be attended to. Most designs have a single compressor, might or might not have two but definitely a thermostatic control (which incidentally you have posted to checked out OK). By process of elimination, that leaves us only two (2) possibilities:

  • the compressor; and/or
  • the refrigerant.
The compressor is basically a motor and a pump. You could check by feeling if the casing of the compressor hums/vibrate, then this would be a safe assumption that the motor is running. On the other hand, the refrigerant could have dried out/leaked and therefore would require a refilling process.

Depending where you are, the availability of service center either authorized or independent, the repair cost would have to be considered given the size of the unit.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

With any refrigerator there are only a few things to make it cold. First make sure the compresor and fans are running. If there are any fans. With this being a brand new unit it is under warranty for the sealed system. So if it is low on refrigerant you can exchange it or go thourgh the warranty process of having a repairman come out and fix it. There should be a thermostat in the refrigerator part that you can ajust. Other than that there's not much else to a refrigerator Exspecially a new one.

To check the refrigerant on a demestic refrigerator you have to have a perising valve to access the system. You can theses at any appliance store it's an a-1 vavle. With a set of refrigeant gauges you should read 2-8 lbs. low pressure on the suction line or the biger line that gets cold. The valve comes with 1/4, and 5/6 fittings in it with directions in it. The thin g is do you have access to refrigerant gauges. Call me at 504-722-3946

Stops cooling. if you unplug it and plug it back in later it will start back up and work fine for a few days.

Good day, there are four possibilities here that could cause your fridge to do what you mentioned. Firstly the fact that you unplug it will enable the motor to cool down.(Hence when you switch it on again it will work until it gets hot and cuts out) Therefore you should check to see or listen if the motor is still working while the fridge is not getting cold. Secondly any corrosion which gathers in the pipes will settle in the choke (A short thicker section of the pipe which is joined between the two thinner gas pipes as part of the piping at the back of the fridge) this can cause only one side to get cool until it cannot circulate the gas throughout the whole system successfully thus causing one side to get warmer which eventually spreads through to the other sections (This one I favor as one of the causes provided the motor is still working while not getting colder) Get a small tapping device (screwdriver or miniature hammer or similar) and gently tap rapidly around the body of the choke, this will loosen any gunge or corrosion build up. Do this a couple of times and then switch on the fridge again. If it still does what it was doing then there is a Third very strong possibility that there is an internal leak in the piping causing the gas to leak out, which will behave exactly the way you describe, but after a couple of on and off switching will never ever get cool again as all the gas will have eventually leaked out. I also favor this as a likely possible cause. Fourthly the thermostat if faulty can only allow the fridge to get too cold or, even get stuck at one temperature without being able to vary when adjusting, or simply not switch on the motor at all.Bank on my two favorable points (two and three) The fridge repair man will have to fit a new choke eventually or repair the internal leak which is too much work to do, and hardly no technician will even consider it, as that fridge will have to be stripped completely inside to access the piping. Sometimes the pipes are not soldered firmly or well enough when they assemble these units at the factory and eventually even after only a few months of purchase(of which i have seen a few times round) the gas starts leaking out.If your fridge is out of the warranty period then you will have to purchase a new one, unless you could find a willing repair man to do the stripping exercise.... So lets reiterate;
Step one: Switch on the fridge again and wait for it to stop getting cold and then while it is still on check and listen if the motor is still working.
Switch off and do as i mentioned in the second possibility, then switch on again and wait until it does the same as before. if it does then it is highly likely that the gas is leaking out slowly and let the repair man do the rest or buy new.
Hope I have been of help,
Good luck.

Kenmore classic bottom freezer refrigeration warm but freezer is cold

I would guess you have just caused a build up of ice to block the air way, which normally takes cold air into the fridge. manually defrost (unplug and wait until the ice goes away) then restart and it should be fine

Freezer keeps going down. brand new

Hi, did you connected plug correctly, green, (ground) black, (hot) white, (neutral) facing your (any) receptacle, pin on right, hot, pin on left, neutral, pin on top, ground, connect plug in like manner, check plug for correct wiring, or could be your motor overload relay, if your days are hot, overload relay will keep compressor off. put you thermostat to max, and try. or maybe you got low voltage, in building, common during summer months, low voltage sometimes damages, motor overload relay, and wiindings. check receptacle with digital multi-tester, check for accurate voltage, some motors won't start when, voltage drops to low, but fans would. unplug for an hour, and retry, then let me know what happened, then i could tell you exactly what's problem are. good luck.

Freezer Working Intermittently; Fridge not as cold as should be

the model number you sent didn't come up,i sounds like you could have an inefficient compressor or a freon leak.when you checked the compressor was the condenser fan motor running?this is what keeps the compressor cool also clean the condenser coil too.another thing is that if you have a timer on your machine it could be sticking,if you send the model number i can tell you where it is,also if you remove the back inside wall of the freezer, look at the evaporator coil, the frost on the coil should be the same over the whole coil,if it isn't you have a sealed system problem and will need to replace the machine.if things are cold in freezer but not cold enough this is what it sounds like,do this, open the freezer door, you should hear the fan blowing,if not the evap fan motor is bad or it could be in defrost,if you don't hear the fan blowing wait around a half hour and check it again, it could be in defrost mode so the fan won't turn on until it comes out of defrost, also like i said make sure the condenser fan motor is blowing and the condenser coil is clean,if everything checks good and the freezer is cold but not cold enough and the best thing to check is the ice cream get a new machine, you have a sealed system problem.let me know what you find and good luck

Fridge not staying cold

did you let the fridge stay in it's new place for 24 hours up right before turning it on?
Try turning it off for at least 24 hours and start it back up again.
If you moved it on its side the compressor oil flows into the lines and must beable to drain back down before using it.
If not you'll seeze the compressor.
not good.
