Question about Canon CanoScan N656U Flatbed Scanner
I managed to get my N656U scanner working on Vista. Download the latest XP driver software ScanGear_65_v5.7.1bEn.exe from the Canon download site. Also download the scangear toolbox file ScanGearToolboxCSv223.exe. Execute the ScanGear_65_v5.7.1bEn.exe file and it should unpack the file in a temporary folder (C:\temp maybe) leaving a file N065U.INF which is the driver. Unplug the USB wire and plug it back in and Vista should go through the motions of recognizng new hardware. When it asks for a disk, browse for the INF file that it dumped in the C:\temp folder. After that it takes the driver and installs it (mine was successfull), and you should hear the scanner motor kick in. After that, install the ScanGear Toolbox software and reboot. I tried all sorts of things (including writing a nasty note to Canon to vent my frustrations with their obsolete hardware) that wouldn't work until I did everything in this sequence. Of course Canon won't admit this will work, but it did for me and my N656U works fine now as it always did for XP, except the button to initiate the scanner does not work. You need to kick the scanner into action using the software or some imaging software "Acquire" or twain option usually found under "File" menus.
