when you get to safe mode try to do a system restore to a date that the computer worked............on xp it will give you a screen to enter safemode with yes or no options ........choose no to go diorectly to system restore...............if not xp look for system restore in the system tools folder on start menu or in control panel............the screen saver error is most likely because you are in safe mode.
As by your description, the FN F7 key combo did not solve the problem. Please restart the machine , press F8 then select from the list "Safe mode" then press enter. Then see how the Touch pad reacts in Safe mode. If it works perfectly in safe mode, we can assume you have a software problem that is preventing it from working in normal windows mode.
Please download and install the latest BIOS for your machine. The E525 has a issue where the TP just stops working, upgrading the BIOS solves the issue on the E525... Acer Aspire 5920 3813 BIOS
Please install one of these drivers for the desired Operating system...
The bootable XP cd you have will work - You need to first reinstall the Operating System(XP), then download and install drivers for the devices(Such as touchpad, wireless, etc.)
The device drivers are all available from Acer's support site; If the Network Card driver isn't installed after the windows XP installation, you will need to use a different computer to download the drivers, and transfer them to your laptop using some sort of removable media - USB Flash drive, portable hard drive, memory card, etc.
If you still have the original disks that came with the computer one of them should be labeled for device drivers and you should be able to put that in your optical drive (CD or DVD reader) and reinstall the drivers for your audio recording device. If you do not have that disk you can go to the Acer web site and down load the driver for the audio device, or try this website: http://drivers.softpedia.com/downloadTag/Acer+Aspire5050 just make sure you choose the correct operating system (Vista or XP)
