Epson 4490 There is a Grinding sound when I scan

Hi, I have a epson 4490 scanner. I have used it maybe 100 times. The last few times that I have scanned with it I hear a loud grinding sound. It still scans okay. Should I be worried? Is there something I can do to fix it?

my epson scanner makes a terrible grinding noise.  It won't scan.  I have turned it off and on/switched both locking devices off and on 5 and 3 times and it still sounds bad and won't scan.  Help!

    Same problem here.

One workaround is simply to let it stay powered on all time. This terrible sound occurs only seconds after power on.

Thanks, I checked the lock switch and is was set to unlocked.

I did further investigation and what happens is as the scanning head moves across the glass it is stopping between the B5 and LTR paper positions that are marked on the scanning bed. The Head stops moving but the motor is still trying to move the head to the end of the glass where it is marked MAX/A4. Any ideas?

    Thanks

Epson products are junk. I have the same problem on my 4490, grinding. Both locks are off.  Now it wont even do anything. Had the same problem on a previous Epson Scanner, and I have an R1800 printer that is the worst problem child I've ever had.i waste so much time getting these damn things to work I could just take my work to a shop and have it done cheaper time wise.  Epson makes crappy products at premium prices, and I will never purchase from them again.

Check the lock position underneath your lid-located in lower right corner. The lock on the transperancy unit tranportation needs to be unlocked (moved to the right).

I tought my scanner was dying. In the modern computer worl, we often say that the failure is to be found somewhere in the front of the screen. This case too.

The lock button under it's cover was set in LOCK mode. I didn't guess that myself (embarassed now, yes).

Hi Ray,
You can download the drivers from Epson at this link:

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Downloads&oid=58611&prodoid=53540925&category=Products

You need the Scanner Driver and Epson Scan Utility; the one at the top of the page is for Windows 7
Scroll down for Vista & XP version.

Epson problem

Here is the download page

http://www.epson.co.uk/Store/Scanners/Epson-Perfection-4490-Photo/Drivers-Support?supportLandingPage=true

To scan to PC you need to use a prog with twain support the basic one in XP is paint.(start/all progs /accessories/paint/file/from scanner or camera) the scan appears huge but that's just the way paint does it save and open with another prog for printing (eg windows fax and picture viewer) and it wil be printed normal size.

When installing drivers do not connect scanner until told to do so by the install prog.

I have escndv.exe error problem with 4490 scanner. I've reinstalled the drivers and it still comes up

Hi there,

The first thing to try is uninstall the Epson Scan. Via either the start
menu item if one exits or from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.

Reboot computer.

Install the latest driver from the epson web site -

http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=50666&infoType=Overview

Latest is 2.68A for WindowsXP, etc.
You should go ahead and download a fresh copy from the web, your copy may be
corrupted.

After the install, reboot.

If that does not solve the problem.
You got to go deeper.

Remove the Epson scan. (again).

Backup your registry.
Edit the registry and remove all references to the Epson Scan.
Remove the folders and entries for Epson Scan in \Windows\Twain_32\

Reboot:
Install Epson scan.

Good Luck!!

EPSON Perfection 4490 - Ireflective media scans, film doesn't

There are two lamps with this model. One in the base for reflective and one in the lid for negatives and slides. If the base one is going out then it will be trying to use the one in the lid. You must remove the white document mat from underneath the lid to expose this lamp so it can scan your negatives.

Hi,
So you've completely ininstalled. Now you should download and install nCleaner, and do a Clean System, and then a Clean Registry. Now:
