There is no screw on the cap. I verified a new one at Sears. The problem was that the last one who pulled it out, replaced back the cap in the wrong position.

    Thank you for your help.

Have you ever checked it before? Do you know if it's a screw on cap? It could be that the cap is slotted, and is only supposed to turn a 1/4 turn. Try not to force it, and use a light touch.

Hope this helps!

Out of curiosity, pull the dip stick out and smell the stick and see if you smell any gas. If so the crank case is full of gas that has leaked by the seat and needle in the carb and you will have to have the carburetor rebuilt along with the oil and oil filter if equiped. Most common problem is an engine that ether has been overfilled with oil or has an blown head gasket. I make these repairs all the time at work. Check the oil level first. If its OK, find a compression tester and check the compression by removing the plug and screwing the tester into the spark plug hole. Turn the engine over and read the gauge on the tester. Should be around 90 Pounds Per Square Inch (Psi) or above. Could also be a problem with the valve settings if they are Over Head Valves.
Thanks; George

Hi, because you are looking down on it, it needs to turn clockwise. But if you were looking at it from underneath it would turn counter-clockwise. I hope that makes sense. Regards Phil

Where is the oil filter on a 17 HP Craftsman briggs & Straten engine and what grade of oil do I need

It may not have a filter, but if it does it would be a small spin on type on the left side of the engine about 4 inches in diameter. Use SAE 30 in that engine. It takes about 48 ounces of oil. Sears sells 48 oz bottles or you can use oil from your favorite auto parts store. Just don't over fill or it will smoke. Verify level with dip stick screwed in.

Oil change instructions and oil recommendation (lost manual)

Hello, oil to use in the engine depends on engine if it is a Kohler you will want to use 10w30 approx 2qts. The Briggs & Stratton engines use HD30 or SAE30 approx 1.5qts. Use the dip stick to ensure you have the right amount and don't over fill.

To change the oil:

  • run engine about 10 minutes to warm up oil so it flows better
  • at the bottom of the dip stick there is either a valve or plug
  • open the valve or plug and let the oil drain (I use an old gallon oil container with a funnel) leave the dip stick out
  • while the oil drains; change the spin on oil filter
  • once all the old oil has drained replace the plug or close the valve
  • wipe down the funnel and use it to refill the new oil
  • use the dip stick to ensure proper fill level
I also recommend that you replace the air filter at the same time, if the engine can't get air is can't run efficiently.

If this is helpful please vote yes, Thank You!!

Oil change

Probably about 1 1/2 quart ... you will have to confirm the fill with the dip stick. Do not over fill .. Put in 1 quart ... start the engine ... let it run for 30 seconds of so ... shut it off and check the dip stick.

Need to know how to change oil

the drain plug should be on the side of the engine that the muffler is on near the bottom of the engine, may look like a small pipe with a threaded cap. remove cap and drain oil into a pan. when empty replace cap. remove the dip stick and pour about a 1/4 quart (to start) and check for level, if still low add more (little at a time) until it reaches the full mark...good luck

Troy Built power washer very difficult to start. Now will not start. Briggs Stratton engine with ''Ready Start''. 2550 PSI. I removed air filter small amount of oil on it. Tried starting without filter -...

You have left gas in it from last time you used it. The leftover gas has clogged up the ports in the carburetor. You will need to clean out the carburetor to get fuel to flow. While you are at it replace the spark plug and change the oil.
Good Day.

Craftsman Won't Start

i think i'd look for a new repairman - did you check the oil? maybe he didn't put any oil back in it! or maybe the carb float stuck and the crankcase is full of gas. lift the hood and look for burnt wires or at the deck for a burnt belt - try to turn the engine over by hand [the round center with the perforations]. does it click when you try the key? if, not, check the fuse. without knowing the area that the smoke came from it's hard to single out a cause

Find whe the oil filter is located

verry carefully. seriously, though, on a briggs engine, it will be on the left side of the engine at the bottom rear - on a kohler it could be in the same position or the left side top rear - on a kawasaki it could be either - get an oil filter wrench and unscrew the filter counterclockwise [if the filter is horizontal, slip some rags under it, there will be a mess], make sure the rubber seal on the old filter does not stick to the engine, if it does, peel it off, put a light coat of oil on the rubber seal of the new filter and screw it on clockwise, tighten about 3/4 turn after contact with the base
