If the laptop has a valid key associated with it, it's usually on a sticker on the hardware somewhere.
If there isn't a valid license associated, then the only legal way to get rid of the message is to buy a valid license.

What to do if the message "This copy of Windows

Simple Answers - In Plain English;

The message you received could have been avoided during the registration period. Do recall when you came to the registration part of the installation? Where it said; Register by Internet or by phone? That was the time to make your copy valid, you have a second chance if you haven't passed the 30 day registration limit. If you wish to reinstall, do this when you reach the Registration Window:

1. Click <Register by Internet>... If your operating system was OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) installed, you will be denied and directed to telephone The Microsoft Validation Center. Once you have been denied a by Internet Validation, Select Register by phone, Select <your country>, a telephone number will appear beneath that box. Dial the number that corresponds to your Country and follow the prompts.

2. You can use the automated system or say: Representative or press "0". The Automated System takes about 6 minutes, asking you to speak or press the numbers, on your telephone kepad. It's on that page, beneath the phone number.

3 The recording will ask how many computers this software has been installed in: press <1> as you or the manufacturer have installed it at least one time.

4. The recorded voice will inform you as to whether that your Key is valid. If it is, and the copy is legitimate, the Automated System will speak a new installation code. If not, wait for the Representative.

5. Explain what you see on your screen, how and why you needed to replace your Operating System (i.e.. replaced hard drive, virus, etc...) and they will walk you through the steps to validate your Key and may ask for the Key on the side of your computer. If the label is missing or cannot be read they may ask for information printed on the hub of your Genuine Windows Installation, or upgrade, disk.

If you've already restored your back-ups, installed your updates, configured your software, security settings, anti-virus, etc.. and prefer not to re-install... Follow this link to the Microsoft Windows XP FAQ page and follow the steps, posted there.

How to resolve the problem of my pc it shows this copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation

Microsoft says:
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then visit the following Microsoft Web site: (
  2. Click Start Diagnostics.

Note If you receive a dialog box that asks whether you want to run this file or to save this file, click Run.

The WGA Diagnostic Tool analyzes the computer and then lists the reasons why you cannot validate the copy of Windows XP. The WGA Diagnostic Tool may also list some error messages.

The most common problems are an invalid product key and a blocked volume license key. If the product key that is generated by the WGA Diagnostic Tool differs from the original product key, go to step 3. If this is not issue, see the "More Information" section to resolve the problem.
  3. If the product key that is generated by WGA Diagnostic Tool differs from the original product key, you must change the product key back to the original product key. To change the product key, use the Windows Product Key Update Tool. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site: (
  4. Follow the instructions on the Web site, and then try to validate Windows XP again.

My compyter show this massege when i turn it on and it continue shows it .you may be a victim of software counterfeiting. what can i do

This message appears if you have performed a windows update that installed the "Genuine Advantage Notification". It is basically saying that your copy of windows is not a genuine version, and you need to get a valid Windows XP cd-key from Microsoft to get any additional non-critical updates from Microsoft. It is just a reminder and will not stop you from using your PC.

If you want to get rid of the message, you will need to follow the instructions to purchase a new key. Alternatively, if you perform a system restore to before you started getting the message, it should work for you.

To do a system restore, go to start, programs/all programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Follow the instructions on this wizard and it will restore your computer to the state it was on the date that you choose.

Hope that helps

I am getting a message "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting"on my laptop. Also the screen is black and no icons and start menu and shortcut icons are not visible on the screen. Please help me...

Windows validation software (Be it Windows XP to Windows 7) has deemed that the Validation Key (VLK) that was used to install your operating system was not legally obtained. If you think this is in error, you can use the Windows Genuine Validation site to check this. Just click on the Validate Windows button and follow the instructions.

Because the validation software has currently decided that your VLK is invalid, it has disabled many desktop features to make itself more evident. This is why the screen is black, no icons, update doesn't work etc etc.

If the the Windows Validation site determines that the VLK is indeed invalid then you have two options to re-validate Windows. One is legal, the other is NOT.

The easiest and legal method implies purchasing a valid windows license key. Simply follow the instructions from this page.

The harder, potentially frustrating, not recommended and certainly illegal method is detailed at these pages.

How can i remove this problem "Windows Vista (TM) Build 6002 This copy of Windows is not genuine" appear when i boot my laptop. Thanks

indows Genuine Advantage Notifications for Windows XP notifies you if a copy of Windows XP is not genuine. The notification messages only appear on computers that have failed the WGA validation process and that are running a copy of Windows XP that is not genuine. If you are running a validated, genuine copy of Windows XP, you will not receive notification messages.

First thought: Not a legal copy or not activated?
Second thought: A virus or spyware? Have you run a full virus scan and a separate antispyware scan?

I don't know if either of these will work, but give them a try (especially the full anti virus and anti spyware scans). I use AVG Antivirus Free and AVG Antispyware Free. I also use ZoneAlarm Free as my firewall to prevent hackers getting access.

I have had a somewhat similar problem (years ago) which turned out to be some malicious spyware controlling access to some Administrator functions.

Good luck
