For DVD/CD you dont need any drivers so dont worry about recovery. Your system will detect your CD/DVD rom when next time it will reboot

While I was trying to burn a back up recovery disk for my emachine's windows vista, emachine didn't come with one, but a program on it to install one. I was told to use 10 writeable cd's or 2 dvds, i...

The problem here is that when disk burners stopped being $400 each, the quality went way down. What's likely happening is that your burner is sucumbing to an alignment or heat-related issue. My gut feeling tells me that you should do the burn, then wait about an hour (maybe two) and do the second disk so the electronics and mechanical parts have time to cool off.

[rant] The real issue in your case is that eMachine's recovery system is an after-thought. Any well thought-out system would let you select which disk to burn or give you the option to make ISOs so you could burn them on another machine. More importantly, they should just let you do this to an 8GB USB stick and call it a day. I would avoid machine that can't be bothered to give you an easy way to recover their machines, then give you the responsibility of creating the recovery media on sub-par hardware. [/rant]

Anyway, let me know how it works out.

EMachine T2778 new hard drive, restore disk aren't working, how do I format?

1st Option: Go to BIOS level and select the CD/DVD device is the first device for boot option and then insert the recovery CD/DVD to format or install OS.
2nd Option: If recovery CD/DVD got curropted and you are having the other OS CD/DVD, then try to load and format or install the OS. Also try to download the recovery image from vendor website.

Revert back for more assistance.

Computer will start and run windows but will not open desktop. When I try to open in safe mode, I just get a blank screen I can't do anything with

The following is based on an article by Billy O'Neal at http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com,

How to use the Recovery Console to make repairs to Windows XP

First, if you don't have a Windows XP Home, Pro or MCE installation CD, don't despair.

Download the following and create a bootable CD from the .iso file: XP Recovery Console

Note that you don't burn the iso file itself to CD, you create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software.
If you don't have any CD burning software installed or if you're unsure, you can follow the tutorial here:
How to Burn an ISO File

You can delete the RC.ISO file once you've burned it to CD or DVD.

Steps to perform on the problem machine:
  1. Place your Windows XP Installation CD or the new Recovery Console disk you just created into your CD or DVD ROM drive, and reboot.
    You should see this:
    pressanykey.png
If you don't see the above, try pressing the F10 or F12 keys during boot and selecting the CDRom device from the list.
If that doesn't work, enter BIOS Setup by pressing the F1, F2, F10 or Del key during boot and modifying the
Boot Order or Boot Priority to make the CD/DVD first boot device.

If your machine won't boot to the CD, make a post in the Microsoft Windows™ forum asking for assistance with this task.
Please include the exact make and model of your computer so we can provide more exact instructions.
  2. Press any key to start Windows Setup (Don't worry.. we're not actually using setup at this point)
  3. Wait a while for setup to start, until you see the following screen, then press the R key.
    img-resized.png Reduced: 71% of original size [ 720 x 396 ] - Click to view full imagercr.png
  4. Wait until you see this screen, and enter the number of your main installation. (Typically 1 for C:\Windows)
    img-resized.png Reduced: 79% of original size [ 645 x 151 ] - Click to view full imagercselectwindowsinstall.png
  5. Press Enter.
  6. If prompted to do so, enter your Administrator password. If you don't have one, leave it blank and press enter.
  7. From the command prompt, enter: chkdsk /r (note the space between chkdsk and /r)
    Allow it to complete undisturbed.
  8. Remove the CD/DVD then reboot. Windows should now begin loading.
For more information on the Recovery Console, read this Microsoft article: How to install and use the Recovery Console

Also, if your computer has a floppy drive, you can download the Windows XP Setup boot disks from Microsoft and boot them to start the Recovery Console.

Drive does read audio cd but not dvd.writer also can't burn any.

If you have Roxio or Sonic installed, sometimes the configuration will get corrupt.

Uninstall all application software that relates to any CD/DVD burning, and try the following:

Download the following FREE burner....it is the best burning software I have ever used and it is FREE!
ALWAYS set the burn speed very LOW....4X for CD's and 2X for DVDS and you will never go back to the other burners again!
The BEST options for using InfraRecorder is to burn data discs, burn Disc images and to create Disc images.
I trashed Roxio and Sonic because they are too memory dependent and they contradict each other's configuration...

Wont burn cds , files , etc

well it could be many reasons why it wont write your burner but first what software you are using for burning. it happens to me before using media player when i try to burn music. the reason was i haven't configure my media player to use my dvd burner for burning because i have dvd burner and a cd burner installed. Now maybe you try to reinstall it using your dvd driver the one which with your dvd burner when you first bought it.
