Vent fan and Stove top lights don't turn on. Something popped while changing the light bulb. We have an 18 year old GE Spacemaker JVM13OH 001 and I recently replaced the bulb and a few days later it blew out and the vent fan stopped working, too. It sounds from this forum that this can happen when changing the bulb without unplugging it. I did not unplug it, and never have, and I guess it caught up to me this time. It's an old microwave so we're probably due for a new one, and it's never heated very well (it doesn't even get popcorn hot enough to pop), but short of buying a new one right now, what would be my repair option to fix the light and fan? Also, is there any hazard in still using the microwave since the bulb and fan stopped working? Thanks!
I would not waste the time or money unless you are very handy with repairing things of this nature. Your best bet is to replace your microwave. If you need any assistance locating a quality replacement please let me know. Please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.

The problem is on the control panel,
This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller. This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.
If the fan is not working, the microwave should not be used, as it may cause overheating, causing further damage to the appliance ad potentially fire damaged.
From description it looks like the appliance has a short circuit, probably in the wirings powering the lamp.
The unit must be taken apart and tested to fix this.

Allways unplug when your working inside a microwave, you will most likely have to replace the bulb again and also the fan, or anything else that is damaged, you will need to inspect the microwave for broken parts.
Il get you a few links to repair parts.

For one, I thought I'd get an email acknowledgement with either the answer or letting me know that your answer was posted. That may be my misunderstanding. It sounded from some info I saw when I posted my problem that there was some other solution besides call a repairman to take it apart and fix it, but that is the recommended advice I just paid $9.95. My wife has been giving me the same advice for free every day over the past month while I was waiting to hear about an answer (not knowing it was posted almost immediately). Well, at least thanks for responding.
