How to install the wi-fi WPA2 on the notebook

I would like to dowload the software so the my notebook will be running WPA2 instead of WEP. I am running windows XP and have SP2 installed on it. I download SP3 to see if that would change it to WPA2 but it did not. I went to the microsoft updates and tried to down load the patch, but it kept telling me that my service pack as a newer version and that It could not be installed. Can you help me
Thank you

I am trying to connect to a pocket wi fi. The manual says when connecting you may have to enter a password. is that for the pc or the wi fi device?

When youclick Refresh network list, then Choose yourwireless network and then click Connect to your secured WirelessNetwork, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connectinto your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, orWPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is used to configure the Wireless Router. The Passphraseis an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrasethat was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router.

  • Before you attempt to use any Wi-Fi network, find out what the SSID, Channel, Mode and WEP keys are. Some Wi-Fi locations do not require a WEP key. Many Wi-Fi providers have this information on their Web site or they'll give you the information when you purchase access.
  • Ensure you have a firewall program installed and running. This will protect your data.
  • Start up your laptop and look for the Wi-Fi network icon in the bottom right of the screen.
  • Click on the Wi-Fi Connection icon on bottom right of screen and you should see a window that indicates connection, strength and duration. Click onthe Properties tab

  • d92d9bd.jpg

This window shows the type of networking card installed. Click on the Wireless Networks tab.

Once the Wireless Network Connection Properties window is open, you will have two options depending on how you set up your laptop. If you do not see any networks listed in Preferred or Available networks, you will have to manually add the SSID. Click on Add. You will have toenter the SSID and WEP key (if required). Click OK and you should then see the network you just added in the Available Networks box.

If you see the correct SSID showing in the Available Networks, then youn eed to click on Configure in order to enter the WEP key if that is required.
In this window, enter the SSID for the Wi-Fi network you want to a ccess. Make sure you do not have CAPS lock or NUM lock while entering the information. If a Network key is required, click on "DataEncryption and then enter the Network key you have been provided with.Again make sure you do not have CAPS or NUM lock on. Click OK when entered. If you have entered the key incorrectly, a message will pop up and you will need to re-enter the key.

Next go to Start - and where it says Connect To click on that and you should see choices similar to the graphic below. Click on WirelessNetwork Connection and it should work. Potential Problems & Their Solutions:
Thereare occasions when the connection doesn't work. In these cases check your firewall software and make sure it allows you to connect to the Wi-Fi network. To check this, disable your firewall software and check the connection again. If you can connect with the firewall programd isabled, you will need to change your firewall settings. If your firewall program is not the problem, check the SSID and WEP key information that you entered. Both of these are case sensitive. If you had obtained SSID information from the Internet, check with someone in the establishment to see if the SSID has been changed.

I have not open wi fi wire less net work . But wire less net work LED is open

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

I am not able to connect to the Wi-fi network in my area from my HP 6535B laptop. I am able to connect using another laptop on which there is specific button for wi-fi but from HP there seems to be...

"Wireless LAN" is the same as wifi. The HP 6535b does come shipped with wifi by default. The wifi can be turned on an off with a button on the laptop. The button looks like a typical wifi symbol (or a palm tree) as is located on the top panel above the keyboard, just to the left of the HP logo. If it is turned on it will be blue, if it's off it will be orange. As long as that is on you should be able to see any wifi networks in your area. If you can see the network but can't connect (even if you type in the right key) the issue may be that the wifi network is encrypted with WPA2 and you don't have the proper Windows patch installed. If you have Windows XP you'll need service pack 3 or the WPA2 patch from Microsfot (google "KB893357" and it's the first link).

    What is my wep key

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a deprecated algorithm used to secure IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. Wireless networks broadcast messages using a radio and are thus more susceptible to eavesdropping than wired networks.

Setting WEP up is done from the wireless security tab of your router configuration, this is usually accessed from your computer using the web address http:\\192.168.1.1 by default. It consists of a pass-phrase and a key. the pass-phrase is used to generate an encryption key, this is then necessary to use any packets (Bits of data) transferred over the air.

Beginning in 2001, several serious weaknesses were identified by cryptanalysts with the result that today a WEP connection can be cracked with readily available software within minutes.[2] Within a few months the IEEE created a new 802.11i task force to counteract the problems. By 2003, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced that WEP had been superseded by Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), which was a subset of then upcoming 802.11i amendment. Finally in 2004, with the ratification of the full 802.11i standard (i.e., WPA2)

Go to Network conections and enable the wireless device. OR, you may need to open up the wi-fi door and check the model# on the wi-fi card, and type in the model# followed by 'drivers' in a Google search to acquie the drivers, too

    Sp3 and wpa2psk wont install

Particularly I think the problem is not in Wi-Fi connection for your laptop, but the configuration of your router, try using wpa security checks and only connection, besides if you give before you upgrade the service pack, the connection works properly. Additionally if you give before you upgrade the service pack, the connection works properly.
