Could be a virus. Do you have a virus scanner on your computer? If not Avast antivirus is a virus scanner you can download for free. http://avast.com . Thats the one I use, another popular one is AVG which can be found at http://www.avg.com. Download one of those and scan your computer for viruses. Hope this helps. If not could you give some more details to what is happening? Good luck.

Choose a programing language and do a web search for tutorials. I advise you stick with open source if possible to start out. Linux comes with a lot of choices.

My computer sounds like a power generator

Is this a laptop or a desktop PC? The two common parts of a computer that make noise are the cooling fan(s) and the hard drive(s). Is the noise caused by air moving, like a hair dryer? or does it sound mechanical like a grinding noise?

Ethernet driver not installed

I usually have to refer to a bulk fix because there is never enough information on the type of driver there are several of them and without the actual information I have to bulk a fix in some ways it is easier to go this route. It does assist however for anyone reading this to let us know what Operating System you are using the make of your computer etc. The information below is an alternative only for assistance only. The site is what I use at my own risk never had an issue with finding drivers.
Driver files can be found at btjunkie.org this is a place I go and get them. If you need future drivers. More than likely you can get the mother board drivers from your disc set provided for you at the time of purchase if you kept them.
You will also need utorrent software as well it is free to download get the software here. Click Me go to the search box type in drivers use this example, XP drivers. There are lots of them you can put on one disc and then insert the burned disc with the downloaded driver files in the ROM drive and point to the driver that has a highlighted yellow triangle or a question mark in DEVICES window which can be found in the control panel or right click on my computer then have the disc ready to be pointed to find the driver during the update driver files link RIGHT CLICK to access the driver update options.
I have used the 700,000 or the 50,000 or any one of the large files of drivers and have been able to repair computers for folks that do not have driver discs that came with there computers. It has never failed me.
You might run into an .ISO which is an image file to download some drivers get the MAGICISO software program at btjunkie.org.
This should enable anyone to find drivers that are hard to find. Use as last resort. Try to use your original discs first or order a lost restore disc makes life easier when installing programs into your personal computer. You may also use paid for Driver update software as well these work pretty well and not to expensive which saves you lots of time and efforts as well. I use driver genius as one of my main programs you can also find this at btjunkie.
Thanks for using FixYa for all your questions. Do not forget to vote for me as well if I helped you. John

My new hard drive seems to be working too hard and becomes non responsive, the fan also engages constantly. Lots of clicks and whirring noises. This is the same problem I had with the hard drive that came...

Well I hope you didn't replace it with an oem drive, because they ****. Go Western Digital & steer clear of Maxtor/Seagate. However, check some of this first. Go into bios after running for a while & check the cpu temp & board temps out. Anything running at or above 165 farenheit(65 celcius) is in or having a major overheating issue. In that case, a thourough cleaning is needed & a fresh dose of cpu thermal paste put on. While it's open be sure to check that all the fans are working. Some of those optiplex's had 2 cpus so be sure to apply new thermal paste to both, remember to wipe off the old stuff first. If the steps above don't help with the existing drive, download a program called "spin rite" & run that after making a complete image of your drive using Acronis or something similar for free off www.download.com . While you're at that site, grab Advanced System Care Free edition & run that as well. That's an easy one click program to use & fixes alot of wierd ****. Make sure you go into the diagnose system section, run that also then under utilities run the disk cleanup, internet optimizer, follow the instructions for getting the defrag program & select smart ram (set that so it starts with windows, same with the defragger). If all that doesn't work, replace the hdd with a Western Digital of similar size & if you used Acronis you can simply mount the image onto the new drive & you're done. All your apps, settings & programs are the same! It's like taking someone's brain out, putting it in a pickle jar & putting it back in again with them being none the wiser, lol.

The fan in modem makes loud noises at times

Modems don't have fans.
I think you mean your fan in the computer makes a loud noise. Some computers have settings where the fan speeds up if you are doing a lot of things--making the computer work harder.
Some fans make noise just before they fail. Depends on the type of noise. If it's a sound that has a lot of rattling in it or maybe a high screeching sound, I'm thinking you'll be needing a new fan. Probably a CPU fan is the culprit. Also, fans on video cards often go bad--so you'll have to open the case and listen to where the sound comes from.

Fan/ engine whining sound

If the fan is only making wind noise it is ok. If it is making matalic noise replace fan. It would be a good idea to clean (blow)out the dust and dirt for the inside of the computer at this time.
