In the control panel, device manager, remove the com ports then the modem. Restart the computer and the OS will reinsatll the com ports and the modem should be on a good port 3.

How do I access internet..desktop trough laptop

You need to share them into a homegroup together.
Or are you using a crossover cable? U cant just use notmal cat5 cables to connect a computer to a computer.
Although, why on earth are you trying to access the internet through another computer?
The whole idea sounds disasterous.
Maybe get a wifi card for desktop if its a distance issue.

The wireless router/AP for your network is working, but your computer is not able to use an IP address to connect to the Internet. You will not be able to connect to the Internet, although you might be...

Check lights on the router and make sure they are on where applicable. Also unplug it for 5 minutes and plug in again the wait 10 minutes to try connecting and give the device lots of time to try and connect. If you haven't already plug it directly in with one of the Ethernet cables, or make sure your pc / computer / device is on auto DCHP and so is the router. if you are using a ipad or tablet try another device or reset the router using the button on it.

When you plug in the ethernet cable the corresponding numbered indicator on the router should flash to indicate a LAN connection and some data flow from the router to the computer. This does not necessarily mean that there is data flow from the internet to your computer via the router. Simple check would be to use a smartphone and try and connect to WiFi on the router but restart the router first. If the smartphone is also having problems then the problem may be with your internet provider or the router. If the smartphone connects then restart the computer. If the computer still does not connect then try the following steps to refresh the computers IP address:
For Windows XP
Step 1
Click Start->Run, type cmd and press Enter.

Step 2
Type ipconfig /release at the prompt window, press Enter, it will release the current IP configuration.

Step 3
Type ipconfig /renew at the prompt window, press Enter, wait for a while, the DHCP server will assign a new IP address for your computer.

For Windows Vista& Windows 7
Step 1
Click Start on the task bar, type cmd into the search box and press Enter.

Step 2
Type ipconfig /release at the prompt window, press Enter, it will release the current IP configuration.

Step 3
Type ipconfig /renew at the prompt window, wait for a while, the DHCP server will assign a new IP address for your computer.

For Windows 8 & Windows 8.1&10
Step 1
Press windows key and X key at the same time. Then click at Command Prompt.

Step 2
Type ipconfig /release at the Command Prompt window, press Enter, it will release the current IP configuration.

Step 3
Type ipconfig /renew at the Command Prompt window, wait for a while, the DHCP server will assign a new IP address for your computer.

Hope that helps.

Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.
