Your disk drive cannot read cd at all, that why it keeps asking to insert cd. Just simply return back where your laptop bought. I think the have warranty of it, it will be replaced for the defective disk drive.

I an looking for a memory stick for an Advent laptop 5311 2GB memory stick can you help please

There are lots of companies who sell this and it is very easy to replace on your laptop too. I would suggest www.ebuyer.com for cheap prices. You need to go into laptop memory section and search for 2GB DDR2 SODIMM memory

The drive has NOT been able to read the directory of the disk you put in.

Possible causes:

Disk may be a DVD which your drive may not be able to read.
Disk may be a DL DVD (double layer) whcih your drive may not be able to read.
The disk might be a BluRay which your drive may not be able to read.
Your drive may be defective or have a dirty read head.

I own a very dated Gateway laptop 9600 and I want to transfer data to new laptop. I am attempting to download files to CDs but it is not reading the blank disk and asking me to insert disk. Is it possible...

Yes it is - but first - make sure that you have inserted the right disk (cd for cd burner). However, you only have 800 mb of available space on a cd disk to use, and I don;t know how many files you have or how big they are, so I can't say how many disks you may need. However, if your laptop has a usb port, I would highly recommend using an external hard drive instead. A 500 gb drive (made by Seagate) will run you about $125, and is well worth th investment. Hope this helps!

CD Drive is not reading disks

It will cost about $30 to buy a brand-new CD/DVD reader/writer to replace your "dead" (broken laser) optical device.

Asked for format disk when insert CD with existing data on CD drive

There is a small possibility that your lens on the CD Player is dirty. Use a normal CD Lens Cleaner, with no solutions, and run it through 2-3 times to clean the lens. Then re-try the CD in question. If you still have problems, it may be the CD you are using, that may have been formatted wrong when initially created....
