Was driving on the highway and suddenly could not accelerate. After coming to a stop the car shut off and smoke began coming from under the hood. I put 2 quarts of oil and waited about 20 minutes and finally got it to turn over. It drives but now I hear a rattling noise under the hood if the RPM are too low and feels like I have lost a lot of power.

If your battery light came on, and you smelled burning rubber, it could be that your belt that drives the alternator, which charges your battery is broken or flipped upside down. Do not drive with the battery light on or else you will stop dead when the battery does not have enough charge in it to keep the car running. If you decide to drive and not follow my advice, then be sure all extra electrical power is off eg. radio, fan, DVD, lights etc.
You may have a blown piston ring, valve seals, valve guides, cracked head gasket or a cracked block, etc... It sounds major though for you to lose power suddenly and have all that smoke...
Have you checked your belts? A piece of belt may have come off and been slapping under your hood, and then fell off completely. While it was slapping, your computer would have detected the slow down of pulleys etc. and caused your engine light to come on. Then when the piece broke off, everything would be back to normal. Let me know!
