Question about LaCie (300770) 250 GB Hard Drive

LaCie drive won't turn on (blue light doesn't go on)

I recently took my LaCie on a flight through security in my carry on. I just tried to plug it in to my iMac and it has no power. The blue light doesn't turn on but the green light on the power cord is on so I don't think it's the cable. Is there any way to fix this or is my hard drive dead?

I had the same problem with my drive. Tried a second power supply with no luck. I was going to take the drive out of the enclosure but I haven't figures out how. There is only one screw on the back and the top of the back seems to be stuck. Any ideas?

My light will not go on, the cable from outlet source is green, but the next leg of the journey to the disc doesnt light up the light and the computer does not recognize the drive as being there. what to do?

I have the same problem with my Lacie drive. It just stopped working, no light no noises no nothing. Tried changing the cable, no change and the cable light does come on. And, there are no screws whatsoever, so as a non-techy I have no idea how to take it apart and put it in an enclosure.

How do I fix it without killing it forever?

I doubt your hard drive is dead, even if your HD was dead the blue light would go one. It has to be the internal controller.. Your best bet is to get a HD enclosure and put your old drive in there. I've burned through 3 Lacie cases, all with similar problems..

What a hassle though - why not just buy a new hard drive, so inexpensive now.

Could be defective. Try swapping power cord and usb cable with know good ones. You could also plug it into a different (known working) usb port.

Good Luck

Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

My Mac suddenly cannot find my Lacie external storage device. I have turned off, unplugged, restarted... etc. and it is still not finding it. The Lacie seems to be on, at least the blue light is...

A continuous flashing light on a Lacie drive is a notification of a problem. I do wonder if the light is flashing the same if the drive is plugged in to the Mac or unplugged.

Lacie external drives tend to have power-supplies which become weak/bad. Most users replace the supply and it will work again for awhile until the supply dies again. Try bringing the drive to a retail dealer with Lacie drives -ask them if you can just test your drive with another power-supply (if you do not have another). You can also try calling Lacie, it's always slightly possible they will be aware of this problem.

Alternately, IF the light is only flashing when the drive is plugged-in to the computer, try using a different USB or Firewire cable.

Lacie hard drive won't turn on

My 1TB Lacie suddenly won't power up (no sound, no blue light). It turned out that I might have worn out the on/off switch over the seldom-use 4 years of usage. I push and flip the switch multiple times, and the Lacie came back to live and mount normally. I will just leave it at the On setting and simply pull the power cord when i want to switch it off.

Obviously, Lacie failed to do QA on the on/off switch because my 4 years usage did not totalled to more than 10 on/off per month.

Hello, I have a Lacie 330770 250 GB hard drive.  It does not respond when I plug it into the outlet.  I have tried several different outlets in different rooms, and neither the green light on the power...

If the green light on your LaCie power supply does not light, you likely have a bad power supply. You can buy a new one from LaCie. If you are purchasing a new power supply from LaCie ask for the higher wattage unit. LaCie upgraded this a while back.

Lacie d2 external drive

I support the comments of (fire sine) I have the d2 120gb Lacie and it was down for two years.  I took it to my apple guys and they said that I needed to go to a data recovery service which would cost a gang of money.  Come to find out, when I decided to update my internal hard drive on my Mac Pro, I had to buy a SATA, IDE, USB 2.0 adapter to back up the internal and transfer to the new internal. Long story short, something said, Hey try and open the Lacie and bypass the board in the enclosure and connect directly to the Western Digital drive inside.  AND WHALA! I got my info, so all I need is a new enclosure.
