Question about Dishwashers

What is the black hose for (trying to disconnect dishwasher. Have followed all the appropriate steps -turning off power/turning off water supply, disconnected everything so far..........except for big black hose. Not exactly sure what this is (comes out of wall & connects to dishwasher). Please tell me what this is for & how to disconnect -thanks.

The water does not drain

Follow the below diagnosis:

1. Drain Hose

It is quite common for a dishwasher to not drain because either the drain hose or the air gap (if the unit has one) is clogged up. Drain hose clogs commonly occur where the hose is attached to the main household drain line, or where the hose connects with the garbage disposer. Try removing the drain hose to unclog any debris. Don't forget to reattach the hose before you start your dishwasher again.

Checking a drain hose

Note:
Disconnect the power source to your dishwasher before you conduct this or any other check. Either unplug the unit from the wall outlet, remove the appropriate fuse from the fuse box, or flip the appropriate breaker in the circuit breaker panel.

Before you can check your dishwasher's drain hose for a blockage, you have to gain access to the hose. First remove the lower kickplate panel located below the door. This panel can be removed by removing a couple of screws that are located either above or below the panel. On some models, the dishwasher door has to be open to access and remove the screws, but then closed in order to remove the panel.

With the panel removed, locate the drain hose. It is connected to the pump located below the lower spray arm. The drain hose runs from the pump to the sink drain, or to the air gap on top of the sink. There is a second hose leading from the pump that is a recirculation hose. When you are checking the drain hose for a blockage, you should check the recirculation hose as well.

Place a shallow pan below the hose to catch any spills. Disconnect the drain hose form the pump by pinching the wire clamp with pliers and then sliding the clamp up the hose. Remove the hose from the pump assembly and wiggle the hose in various locations. This may help to loosen the blocked debris.

Try running water through the hose to loosen and unblock the debris. A garden hose at full pressure is efficient to use for this task. Now disconnect the recirculation hose and check it for blockage in the same manner.

Once you have successfully removed any and all blockages from either or both hoses, reconnect each hose to the dishwasher. Replace the clamps, and replace the lower panel. Reconnect the dishwasher's power supply and run the dishwasher to make sure it is running proplerly.

2. Pump Assembly

The pump assembly is comprised of a pump, wash impeller, and drain impeller. The pump ejects the water from the unit, the wash impeller pushes water through the spray arm, and the drain impeller directs the water towards the drain port. Examine your dishwasher's pump assembly. Clean out any debris that may be blocking it. Replace the pump assembly if any of its parts appear to be worn or defective.


3. Belt

It isn't very common, but sometimes a dishwasher's pump assembly is driven by a belt. If that belt becomes worn and defective, then it cannot properly run the pump that drains your dishwasher's tub. If your dishwasher uses a drive belt, examine it now. If it shows signs of wear, replace it.

Examining a dishwasher belt

Note:
Disconnect the power source to your dishwasher before you conduct this or any other part examination. Either unplug the unit from the wall outlet, remove the appropriate fuse from the fuse box, or flip the appropriate breaker in the circuit breaker panel.

Locate and gain access to your dishwasher's belt. It will be located behind the lower kickplate panel. The belt will be made of rubber and will be about twenty-five inches long. Some are clear in color, while others are black. The belt will be looped around a pulley at the base of the pump assembly and around a pulley at the base of the motor. The motor will likely be towards the right, with the pump assembly located closer to the middle.

You do not have to move the dishwasher away from the wall in order to access and/or replace its belt. You only need to remove the lower kickplate/access panel. There will be a few screws holding the lower access panel in place. Remove these screws to remove the panel. You may need to first open the door to remove the screws, but then close the door to remove the panel.

With the lower panel removed, the belt is fully exposed. Closely examine your dishwasher's belt. You are looking for signs of wear such as little cracks in the rubber and places where the belt may be stretched. If you find signs that your belt is worn, replace it.



Replacing a dishwasher belt

3. Carefully roll the belt down from the pump housing to the pump's pulley.

Most cleaning problems are caused by the dishwasher not getting enough wash water, so the water-inlet valve is often to blame. This valve is usually at the bottom left or right of the dishwasher, behind the lower access panel. It's the device with the main water line from the house, a rubber tube to the dishwasher, and two wires attached to it. When a water-inlet valve is defective, you may hear the sound that's usually referred to as "water hammer." If the water-inlet valve is defective, you need to completely replace it. Be sure to read and understand any instructions that come with the new water inlet valve.

Tools required:

Adjustable wrench

Multi-Screwdriver

Step 1. Disconnect the dishwasher from its power source.

Note: Dishwashers are usually wired directly to the home's electrical system. To disconnect the power, switch off the circuit breaker or remove the fuse for the electrical circuit the dishwasher is attached to. Try to turn the unit on after disconnecting the power to be sure you were successful.

CAUTION: If you're not sure you've shut off the power properly, DO NOT CONTINUE. Call a qualified appliance repair technician to complete the repair.

Step 2. Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher. This is usually underneath the kitchen sink or in the basement or crawlspace near the location of the dishwasher. Pliers may be helpful here.

Note: If there are no shut-off valves, you must shut the water off at the main water supply valve for your home.

Step 3. Remove the lower panel(s) of the dishwasher. These are usually held by 2 to 4 screws at the upper and lower corners of the panel(s).

The inlet valve is usually near the front of the dishwasher. Attached to the valve you'll see: 2 or 4 wires, the water supply line from the house and the water feed line that goes to the dishwasher.

Step 4. Remove the household water supply line from the valve. The line is usually secured with a brass compression nut. The water supply line is usually copper or braided stainless steel.

CAUTION: Water supply line may be hot.

Step 5. Remove the fitting from the valve the water supply line was attached to. This fitting may be very difficult to remove. It may help to put the valve into a vice in order to remove the fitting. If you cannot remove it, replace it. The fitting is not an appliance part but a plumbing part that is available at most hardware stores.

Step 6. Remove the screws holding the valve to the dishwasher frame.

Step 7. Label the wires to the valve so you'll be sure to reattach them correctly.

Step 8. Remove the wires from the valve.

Step 9. Remove the clamp on the black rubber water discharge tube and pull the tube off of the valve.

Step 10. Reinstall the old fitting (or a replacement fitting if necessary) onto the new valve the water supply line was attached to. Use Teflon tape or pipe joint compound as a thread sealant. Make this fitting tight to prevent leaks. Make sure that the fitting points in the same direction as the old one so that the water supply line will meet up with it properly.

Step 11. Install the new valve in the reverse order of the removal instructions.

Note: The water supply line is under high pressure. Be sure to tighten the fittings properly.

Step 12. Turn on the water to the machine, and check for and correct any leaks.

Step 13. Reinstall the access panel(s). Restore the power to the dishwasher and test.

Note: You may have to let the dishwasher run a few minutes before it reaches the next water fill cycle.

Cleaning valve


hi friend,
Unplug your dishwasher for safety reasons, and double check that it is no longer connected to its power source. Depending on your dishwasher, you may have to turn off its power from the circuit breaker or remove a fuse. Shut off your water valve and turn off the water supply to your machine. You may have a hose that runs from the faucet.
  • Step 2 Find the panel underneath your dishwasher, often referred to as the kick plate panel. Some panels need to be unscrewed from their position; others fold down because they are hinged to the machine.
  • Step 3 Locate your inlet valve. In most machines, it is located in the left or right corner of the panel and should be visible to you. Your inlet water valve will have hoses connected to it--one that takes water to the machine and another that takes water away. This is a good time to check that your hoses are in good condition, not corroded or kinked. Take the hoses off the dishwasher intake valve. You should probably place a container underneath before disconnecting in case there is water left in the hoses.
  • Step 4 Disconnect the wires from the inlet valve. Write down where the wires go so there are no problems reconnecting later. Not using the wires but the connectors instead, disconnect the wires. You may have to use pliers to do this.
  • Step 5 Unscrew the inlet valve, remove it, and save the screws. Now, place your new water inlet valve where the old one used to be, and screw it in place with the old screws.
  • Step 6 Replace the hoses and wires. You may want to turn on the water, and check if the hoses are secured in place and not leaking. Put panel back in place and turn on the power to the dishwasher.

    Internal filters Every dishwasher has some type of filter to keep large food particles and foreign objects away from the pump assembly:

    • Most modern dishwashers have self-cleaning filters that don't need any routine cleaning.


    • Some have filters in the bottom of the dishwasher that you need to periodically clean. You don't need any tools to remove the filter, and cleaning it is easy. Consult your owner's manual to determine which type you have and its maintenance requirements.


    If your filter is clogged, it may be causing the cleaning problem.

    Drain valve Some dishwashers have a valve (or gate) that should open only during draining. If debris lodges in the valve, it can't close properly, so water drains out during the wash cycle. Most dishwashers drain into the garbage disposer. If yours does that, listen for water flowing into the disposer during the wash cycle. If you can hear it then, the drain valve may be clogged.

    Spray arms There's a spray arm at the bottom of your dishwasher--it may have a tall spray tube mounted to the center of it. There may also be a spray arm located directly beneath the upper rack of dishes and/or above the upper rack.

    If debris is blocking the holes in the spray arms where the water comes out, it could cause cleaning problems. Regularly inspect each of the spray arms and clean out the holes as necessary.

    Water temperature To get the best cleaning results, the water entering your dishwasher needs to be hot enough. Try running the hot water in your kitchen sink for about 30 seconds before starting the dishwasher, to pre-heat it. Also, if your dishwasher lets you select a higher wash or rinse temperature, try that to see if it helps.

    To check the temperature of the hot water that comes from your kitchen faucet use a waterproof thermometer. If the water isn't 120 degrees Fahrenheit, your dishwasher may have trouble getting your dishes clean. You could increase the temperature of the hot water to the whole house--and therefore the dishwasher--by adjusting the hot water heater thermostat.

    Warning! To lessen the risk of scalding, don't set the hot water heater temperature higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Detergent cup Dishwashers don't perform their best if detergent is introduced only at the beginning of a cycle, so add detergent to both parts of the cup.

    No you will have disconnect the copper line. I would suggest that while you have it out that you replace the copper line with a braided stainless steel hose (also known as a dishwasher connector hose) If possible get a 60" or 72" hose so you can hook up the dishwasher when it is out and then push it back in with the water supply already hooked up.

    Water-inlet valve Most cleaning problems are caused by the dishwasher not getting enough wash water, so the water-inlet valve is often to blame. This valve is usually at the bottom left or right of the dishwasher, behind the lower access panel. It's the device with the main water line from the house, a rubber tube to the dishwasher, and two wires attached to it.

    When a water-inlet valve is defective, you may hear the sound that's usually referred to as "water hammer." If the water-inlet valve is defective, you need to completely replace it.

    Dishwasher Water Inlet Valve Replacement

    Be sure to read and understand any instructions that come with the new water inlet valve.

    Tools required:

    Adjustable wrench

    Multi-Screwdriver

    Pliers

    Step 1. Disconnect the dishwasher from its power source.

    Note: Dishwashers are usually wired directly to the home’s electrical system. To disconnect the power, switch off the circuit breaker or remove the fuse for the electrical circuit the dishwasher is attached to. Try to turn the unit on after disconnecting the power to be sure you were successful.

    CAUTION: If you’re not sure you’ve shut off the power properly, DO NOT CONTINUE. Call a qualified appliance repair technician to complete the repair.

    Step 2. Turn off the water supply to the dishwasher. This is usually underneath the kitchen sink or in the basement or crawlspace near the location of the dishwasher. Pliers may be helpful here.

    Note: If there are no shut-off valves, you must shut the water off at the main water supply valve for your home.

    Step 3. Remove the lower panel(s) of the dishwasher. These are usually held by 2 to 4 screws at the upper and lower corners of the panel(s).

    The inlet valve is usually near the front of the dishwasher. Attached to the valve you’ll see: 2 or 4 wires, the water supply line from the house and the water feed line that goes to the dishwasher.

    Step 4. Remove the household water supply line from the valve. The line is usually secured with a brass compression nut. The water supply line is usually copper or braided stainless steel.

    CAUTION: Water supply line may be hot.

    Step 5. Remove the fitting from the valve the water supply line was attached to. This fitting may be very difficult to remove. It may help to put the valve into a vice in order to remove the fitting. If you cannot remove it, replace it. The fitting is not an appliance part but a plumbing part that is available at most hardware stores.

    Step 6. Remove the screws holding the valve to the dishwasher frame.

    Step 7. Label the wires to the valve so you’ll be sure to reattach them correctly.

    Step 8. Remove the wires from the valve.

    Step 9. Remove the clamp on the black rubber water discharge tube and pull the tube off of the valve.

    Step 10. Reinstall the old fitting (or a replacement fitting if necessary) onto the new valve the water supply line was attached to. Use Teflon tape or pipe joint compound as a thread sealant. Make this fitting tight to prevent leaks. Make sure that the fitting points in the same direction as the old one so that the water supply line will meet up with it properly.

    Step 11. Install the new valve in the reverse order of the removal instructions.

    Note: The water supply line is under high pressure. Be sure to tighten the fittings properly.

    Step 12. Turn on the water to the machine, and check for and correct any leaks.

    Step 13. Reinstall the access panel(s). Restore the power to the dishwasher and test.

    Note: You may have to let the dishwasher run a few minutes before it reaches the next water fill cycle.

    Switch off, turn off power, turn off water, disconnect water inlet hose, check for blockages, remove filters, clean filters, refit filters, check water supply, reconnect water supply, reconnect power, turn on - problem solved.
