Question about Garmin GPS Map 76 GPS Receiver

MAP 76 locks up in normal mode after acquiring and starting to track, three to four minutes. Screen goes blank except for vertical stripe, no keys work. Have to pull batteries to turn off. Unit works continually in simulate mode, but I cannot upload or down load data...unit no longer recognized by computer. Stan

    Mine does the same exact thing. The only thing I've noticed so far is that a small metal piece where the batteries go has broken off. I don't know if there is no connection b/c the metal piece broke off or what? However, mine will still load up to the computer.

    My Garmin GPS Map 76 is doing the same thing. It starts acquiring satellites and before it can finish locking them in the screen goes blank with only a vertical line on the screen. The keyboard becomes completely unresponsive. The only way to resolve it is to pull the battery and replace it.

I had the same problem (blank screen, vertical line). After speaking with Garmin, I was told to turn off the WAAS function. Disable it for now, because the WAAS signal, coming from the satellite, has changed, and Garmin has not yet published a remedy to correct this problem. A fix should be out in a software update, sometime in the future, hopefully. Just so you'll know, I also did a software update, to the latest version 4.0. The unit performs perfectly now, however, the accuracy is not quite as good, due to the lack of WAAS.

What you said does make sense. When you have your unit in simulator mode, the GPS receiver is turned off, so it is not receiving signals from the satellites. The strange signal from the WAAS satellite must be what has been messing things up. Good Luck!

your mobile has a sensor at the top of you phone which is use to make you screen blank when you keep your phone near your ear to save power during a call.(it may be a sensor malfunction)

How do i program a mag card??


A mag card is simply a card with a magnetic stripe that holds data ... like a credit card or a hotel key, etc. The information on the data is actually just composed of a series of vertical lines. (If you actually had a thin enough magnetic razor blade, you could, crudely, create magnetic data onto a magnetic stripe).

In reality, all you need is a card writer. These are somewhat similar to a cd/dvd burner. You would get a series of blank cards, and you would need the track information and such that would go onto the card. The software that accompanies the write will allow you to input the correct fields, such as name, expiration date, card number, and track 1 & 2 data into the proper fields. Once those are put in, you simply put in a blank card, and "burn" it as you would a cd. The process takes maybe 30 seconds. When I last worked in the industry on that side of things a little over three years ago, a card writer was anywhere from $200 to $450 USD.

Blank Screen on Garmin E-Trex Vista


The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.

Unit shut down


I have run into the same problem and it may be related to the WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) feature. Try disabling this feature (under MAIN MENU / Setup). I used this receiver overseas (Asia and Europe) last year for 35 days straight with no problems. During this time WAAS was disabled as none of these satellites are visible overseas. The problem occurred intermittently prior to the overseas trip, and has reoccurred after returning. I was running into the same problem this past weekend and noticed the screen blanking out (with the vertical line) shortly after differential corrections were applied to the GPS signals. I disabled the WAAS and let the receiver run for over an hour. The problem did not return. Hope this helps.

The problem is the government made changes to the WAAS satelites. When the GPS tries to find the sattelites, it can't lock on and goes into an error mode and locks up.To eliminate the problem disable the WAAS which can be done when starting the unit. Then go online and download the 3.70 firmware version and load it into your unit. This will correct the system to function with the newer WAAS system. After installing the 3.70 software then you can enable the WAAS function.

GPS screen went blank


My problem exactly. Unit would start up, acquire satellites, then the screen would go blank with a single vertical line. Unit would not respond to buttons or even turn off. Unit works fine after I did the reset:

- w/unit OFF, press and hold QUIT+DOWN+MENU
- press and release the power button, release DOWN, keep holding QUIT+MENU for 5 seconds.
- unit prompts something like: "erase all data;" choose yes.
- you will lose waypoints, etc.
