Did you even get the SR4400 and speakers to the point that it runs by itself (test tones, FM)?
Master that part, then attach peripherals.
Some basics to keep in mind:
INs connect to OUTs.
Compatible connectors fit without modification.
Never test with MAXIMUM volume. If you can't hear something at medium volume it ain't there.
Regarding the DV4400: I'd advise you to run it's Component Video directly to your TV and its coaxial digital audio to the receiver so each medium is handled by the intended specialized electronics first. Run the DVD analog audio to the TV for watching news using TV speakers and without the receiver turned on.
