If we're talking about the thing that has a pipe to each of the cylinders on your engine then the answer is Yes, your injector pump must be correctly timed in order for the engine to run properly. This is the part of the diesel that does what a distributor on regular car engine does, namely ignition timing.

The exact procedure for setting the timing depends on what model of engine you have, get a manual from Perkins to be sure.

That said it usually goes like this:
1 - make sure the engine has the correct cylinder at TDC, this makes the gear connected to the camshaft be in the correct position.

2 - Set the pump at the correct position, this will either involve looking at a mark in a window on the pump (standyne pumps), or looking at the keyway in the shaft of the pump, etc.

3 - Bolt the pump into place on the engine making sure the gears/drive meshes nicely. Connect all the fuel lines to the pump.

4 - purge the injectors by loosening each fuel line at the cylinder end and cranking the engine until fuel comes out of the pipe, then tighten it back up.

5 - Crank the engine and start it, check the rpm.

Rank this answer if it helped,
Carl

Sounds like an internal problem. You will probably have to take the casing of the welder off and examine all your wire sets. It could be something simple as a connection issue. The transformer may have blown as well.

Miller welder 225 arcs but wont continue welding

There is an electrical connector that the wiring harness for the engine plugs into at the rear of the generator case. On the one that I had, there was corrosion in that connector. Once I fixed the wiring there, the voltage sensing feature worked correctly. The connector was located on the right side if you were looking at the controls. Hope this helps.

Have a Miller big 40 welder and the engine won't turn over

I'm not familiar with this particular unit--do you mean to say that the cooling system froze during the winter? If so, and the engine has overhead valves, the cylinder head, block, or both may have cracked causing water to leak into the cylinders which would have rusted the rings and cylinder walls (together). You are looking at major overhaul or even engine replacement (not what you were hoping). Good luck!

Miller welder starts fine bur appear to run out gas need help adjuting linkage to fuel control

you need to adjust the throttle governor on the side of the carburetor you will see a adjustment screw do a weld to get the welder to runs at high speed then adjust the screw till it runs continuously, if it still dies out change the fuel filter and try again drain the carburetor bowel if it's diesel replace fuel filter and run fuel threw the water trap.

Miller welder serial number KF957066. Please tell me about this machine is it a generator type or three phase? It is in an auction and was wondering about it. Never saw one in my life although I have been...

Miller welders are great. I've been around them a long time as an electrician in the mines years ago. They make a 3 phase model and a motor gen type too. They are both good welders in my opinion.

Miller bobcat 250 welder with kohler lp gas engine won't idle properly any adjustments for air/fuel mix?

Make sure that the idle is set at 40Hz. You do this by placing a frequncy meter on one of the 120Vac outlets. If frequency is low, the engine will run rough at idle. There is a 3/8 nut next to carberator that needs to be turned to the right to increase the idle speed.
