Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

I have a Kitchen Aid clothes washer and the tub that you put clothes in won't stay centered. When it spins during the spin cycle, it gets out of balance and thump, thump, thumps............me and the wife, moved it from the wall and found a spring under it. Does the tub have any springs on it that help keep it centered, and if so, how do I remove the top to fix it ?? Its a top load washer.

Thanks Mike for the information. It helped greatly and gave me an idea what to look at. In my Kitchen Aid clothes washer though, (1982 model), there is 5 springs underneath. 3 for the tub, a counterbalance spring and a tension spring (according to the manual I downloaded). Anyway, the counterbalance spring was the one that came off. The bracket, rusted that the spring hooked to, the spring pulled out and presto, instant unlevel and unbalanced spin cycles. ha ha ha So being a retired toolmaker, I made another bracket. Looked at the exploded view dieagrahmn (parts list) that I downloaded off kitchen aids web site, and put my modified bracket on, rehooked the spring, now that little baby runs like a singer sewing machine. However Mike, the information you gave me gave me a starting point and gave me an idea of what to look for and notice. Without your help, I don't think I'd of solved the problem. THANK YOU SIR..........so much................Darrell

i have the same problem, just know it is a spring issue as the machine cycles properly, but have been unable to download a schematic drawing of the suspension system. i have been on kitchenaid's site and have exploded diagrams of the machine base, but it does really show the attachment points of the springs. where did darrell get the manual? thanks eric

There are 3 springs that hold it to the frame, remove the 2 screws from the washer head, one on each side, now pull up on the head and lift the front out and up,you will see 2 spring clips pop them out with a flat screw driver, open the lid and pull the washer case toward you,sit it aside and look at the other springs they will tell you where the other one goes, also the tub sits on a triangle bracket make sure that is in place to,under the tub,let me know-mike

My washer/dryer combo Frigidaire washer dosn't spin water out of clothes completely after spin cycles the clothes is still very wet. On the 1st spin cycle drum dosn't spin just makes noise, the 2nd and...

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand your Frigidaire laundry center, model# FGX831CS, is not spinning water out of your clothes completely. I see that on the first spin cycle the drum is not spinning and is just making noise, and on the second spin cycle the drum spins to the left very slowly and loudly. First check to see if your washer is overloaded. Try taking some clothes out and spinning them again. Secondly, make sure that the load is not out of balance. Try rearranging the clothes to allow for proper spinning. I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your dryer status has changed successfully. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-
WP

Kenmore 22622 washer tub will not spin during spin cycle, burnt smell

Sounds like the belt between the motor and the tub is slipping or the tensioner spring may have failed.

Excessive vibration and movement during spin cycle

mostly its faulty motor problem or drain problem. It won't drain If your washer won't drain, check these:

It spins, but doesn't pump
It doesn't spin or pump
It pumps, but the water returns
It spins, but doesn't pump If your washer spins but doesn't pump the water out, the drain line is probably clogged. In many washers, a small sock or other piece of clothing can get between the clothes tub and the outer tub that holds the water. If the clothing gets between the tubs, it may then get into the drain hose that's attached to the pump--or even into the pump itself. If it's in the pump, you need to remove the hoses from the pump and pull the item out.

To remove the sock from the outer tub port, open the washer's main access panel and remove the large-diameter rubber hose that connects the pump to the bottom of the outer tub. Then, using needle-nose pliers, try to grab and remove the clothing through the port.

Sometimes you can't remove the stuck clothing from below. Then you have to remove the agitator, top of the outer drum shield, and inner clothes tub. This isn't easy to do--and you may need special tools--so you might be happier getting a qualified appliance repair technician to do the job.

If the drain line isn't plugged, the problem may be with your pump. Even if the pump appears to be turning, the internal impeller may be broken. If so, you need to replace the pump.

It doesn't spin or pump If your washer doesn't spin or pump water out but the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley. If so, you need to replace the pump. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it.

It pumps, but the water returns If the water that pumps out of the machine goes back into the machine after the spin cycle, your washer may be siphoning the water from a laundry tub that has a slow drain, back into the washer. The usual remedy for this is to improve the draining of the laundry tub. (Is something stuck in the drain?) Also, check for these problems:

  • If the drain hose reaches more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub, cut off the excess.

  • If your drain hose is lower than the washer's cabinet, install an air gap/siphon break assembly.

This washing machine has self-leveling rear legs. Tilt the machine up on the front legs and you'll hear the back legs drop down to re-level itself. Center the basket and restart.

I think that you have a bad drive block. It is located under the inner tub and the agitator. It is a pretty intense repair if you have never replaced one.

Washer spins but not enough to extract water from clothes or tub.

Check your exit hose spigot, it may be clogged. This is if your filter is all clean. There should be air for passage in the standpipe behind. Your hose should not fit airtight into the standpipe and neither too deep into it. Snaking out your standpipe would be good too.

GE WSM2780W Stacked Washer spin cycle

With no clothing in the wash tub take the following steps:
1. remove the front cover from the wash tub
2. run a full cycle of laundry and observe the tub's behavior

Potential Solutions:
A. If the tub begins to shake wildly during a full wash cycle with no clothing in it then you will need to adjust the 3 large springs on each side of the tub until the unit is working in a more-balanced position. This is simple to do by hand. If the tub appears to be shaking too far forward, then unhook the 2 large springs in back so they are tighter. Then run a full wash cycle again with no clothing.
* note: there are smaller springs too - you don't have to adjust these to fix your issue

B. If the tub works fine with no clothing during a full wash cycle, then try to load your clothing in a more balanced fashion. For example: if your wash load is only a small kitchen or bath rug then when the unit spins it will spin off balance with a wet & heavy item on only one side of the tub.

C. If you'd like to replace the 3 large springs, I can get you the part numbers. There are specific springs for both sides of the wash tub and they are different part numbers. The full replacement of the 3 large springs can be done by hand.

thanks,
Chris I.

SPin CYcle Noise

The drain line is probably clogged. Maybe that a sock or other piece of clothing get between the clothes tub and the outer tub that holds the water. In this case it may then get into the drain hose that's attached to the pump. Remove the hoses from the pump and pull the item out. In case it clean there, check the outer tub port- open the washer's main access panel and remove the large-diameter rubber hose that connects the pump to the bottom of the outer tub. Then try to remove the clothing through the port.
