You did not have to unplug the onboard USB ports.
Your OS should see the card reader and set it up, unless you are using Win98 or WinME. I would plug the onboard USB ports, then restart with the new internal card installed.

How to install a sd card reader on a Dell Dimension 8200 PC Desktop? no 4 pin usb on motherboard?

I managed to install a card reader on my Dell Dimension 8200.

The main problem is that the Dell motherboard does not have the correct USB pin. This is a 9-pin MoBo USB header.

The quick answer is I installed a USB card with an internal port.

Secondly I reverse mounted a powered 4-port USB hub in the spare 3.5" bay.

Third, I purchased 2 USB 5 pin male to usb leads...

You cannot buy a USB card with 2 internals and do away with the 4 port powered USB hub because the card reader does need to be connected to a powered USB port.

Connecting a card reader to the mB

Most multi card readers are usb, but not the external kind that fits in the back of the motherboard, the internal kind.
If you look at the edges of the otherboard you will see three small blue connectors. Those are internal USB connectors, it should say next to them. Plug it in the correct way round (it will only go in one way) into any one of the three.

USB Header

The only way is to purchase a USB Board to install in the PCI slot, but that would be overkill since you PC already has 4) 2.0 USB ports. I would exchange that internal reader for an external reader.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Imstalling internal card reader

Well, installing an internal card reader without a spot on the motherboard, is a little hard to do. I would suggest buying an external card reader. They are a little cheaper, and a lot easier to setup and use, since they just connect to a USB port which all computers have.

Installation help for dynex dx-crd12 all in one card reader

I would recomend installing the card reader this way. Shut off all programs that you don't need during the start up. When the card reader installs its kind of touchy, froze my computer a few times.

If you have blue 9 pin usb headers on your motherboard, consult your manual for this, or google it. Take the 5 pin connector, find the side with the red wire, face that side away from the side of the blue header with a missing pin. Make sure you connected to the row with 5 pins. After that you should be able to power up your computer and it will work.

If your computer doesn't reconize the card reader use the cd it came with.

Dell Dimension 9100 PC Desktop problem

I'm not sure where the floppy drive comes in, but if you have usb connectors on your mobo then you can connect the 5 pin connector to half of the usb pins.  Try that and see what happens.

Motherboard

Are you trying to install the Dell Media Card Reader? If so then the other end of the ?FlexBay USB cable that plugs into the card reader goes into a small rectangular connector towards the back of the motherboard. Specifically orient as follows; place the computer on its side, the power supply to your left and the front of the computer facing towards you. Starting at the back of the motherboard next to the power supply follow the back edge of the motherboard till you come to the approximate center of the board. About an inch towards you there will be a rectangular connector the FlexBay USB cable end should fit into. If this isn?t the cable from the Dell Media Card Reader let us know and we?ll try to help, otherwise please don?t forget to rate this posting.
