Insert any disc CD/DVD and keeps going in to to self check for sometimes minutes and sometimes hours. Very annoying as the DVD recorder is connected with the sky and keeps flashing sky up for 1 second then off again.

Please be a bit more specific if you can. In what way is it repeating itself? And once it comes on does it stay on? It could be a component faulty on the power supply side.

On the tv screen it is telling me to check disc....it played some of it yesterday and today it said check disc

The problem is I get a message on the TV screen that says “An error has occurred. Please press enter”

When I press enter I get another screen message that says “Please change the disc”

Of course I have done this many times, It makes no difference if there is a disc in the tray or not. The whole process just keeps repeating no mater what I do.
At the same time the front display says “Self Check”
Holding the channel up and down buttons in at the same time to reboot the system (as suggested by Panasonic phone help) does not work. I have unplugged the unit and left it disconnected for hours without any success.
Any help will be greatly appreciated as I really like this recorder.

Self checking

I have had a Panasonic DMR-E85 with this exact same problem you are describing. As I bought a Freeview Dual-tuner PVR I just bought a second-hand DMR-E55 as I liked the Panasonic interface. Two months down the line it is now exhibiting the exact same problems, except now as well as the continual self-check rebooting, it's also refusing to eject the disk. Booo. Time for me to buy a new DVD recorder again, and this time certainly not Panasonic... :(

Recorder keeps 'self checking' then taking dvd back to begining, although only on recordable dvd's, not rented. Are recorders worth repairing or are you better just buying another?

Self checking

This is a known fault with the Panasonic DMRs. Basically, the main chip in the power supply circuitry starts to fail intermittemntly due to poor design of the heatsink.
If you search FixYa site it will come up many times.
Unless you or a friend can (safely !) identify, handle, desolder and solder electronic components, this is not a DIY repair.
If you can, like I said there are already several really good FixYa fixes for this.

Are you trying to play DVD+R's? I have the same trouble. It only like DVD-R's and it is picky about which companies DVD's they are also. Don't use generic ones, I guarantee the failure rate will make the money you saved buying them go away quickly.

Stays in self check mode

If self check keeps going after 1 minute unplug machine and open top cover remove 4 screws that hold the recorder top cover remove disk reinsert screws and plug in see what happens.

Most of the time a small scratch or fingerprint on recorded disk cause these units to lock up
