JVC N Series TV "stuck' in sleep/timer mode, won't wake up

I switch on the TV on the set and the standby red light is on. When I use the remote or the channel controls on the TV to switch it on, it powers up for a  split second - I hear the audio from the channel - and then it goes to sleep, with an orange light flashing on the set, marked On TImer.
Once in a while it is able to come to life properly but we can't find how to neutralize this timer operation and the problem then returns.
This model is at least 12 years old, by the way.

Turning the set off at the wall sometimes helps but not often enough for me to see the link.
I can't operate the TV from the set buttons - nothing works, the orange On Timer light just keeps on blinking.

We use the front panel AV sockets - my suspicion is that accidentally pressing the MENU button on the set at some point next to these inputs has initially created the problem.

    Thanks - Simon

I can't go into any menu options. The TV is blank.

i appreciate the varied solutions offered so far. Thank you all. If calling a repair guy is the consensus answer, I'll look to see what it costs and then to see if it works. If it does - you guys have given me the answer I needed.

Any other suggestions that might get the thing working myself?

  • simon6260 Sep 26, 2008

Holding the menu button down doesn't start up the TV, unfortunately. It sounded so promising!

I've unplugged everything and will give it a try in the morning - it's coming to midnight here in Singapore.

After 12 years of service, Tv might have problem of weak capacitors, dry solder joints, lose connections etc.
Qualified tv tech person can look after all above issues and in my opinion, you need to call any of them.

I think, you tv requires some solder work to function again.

Local repair shop can help you or you can do it yourself if you know good solder skills.

Try pressing the timer button again and then if that does not work go into the menu and look for power saving options. shut off the timer by that way. make sure the tv is on the video setting and not av or dvd if it has those as you won't see the menu.

    1. Try this - hold the menu button down for 10 seconds. TV should power up; you will have to turn off front panel buttons on menu.

    2. You can also try a hard reset: Unplug TV from AC mains and remove all cables from TV. Wait about 30 minutes and replug to AC power and redo the cabling. Switch on the TV and see if it works..

Tv standby

If your TV is stuck in standby mode, and does not wake up with the remote, either the remote is faulty (did you check the remote batteries?) or the TV is. Inexpensive current TVs do not have manual buttons on the TV, they depend on the remote for everything.

Sharp LC-40LE240EX standby flashes from red to green repeatedly

Short circuit protection circuit works. There is something short, inside the TV, to any circuit boards. If you wish to get more details of these blinking codes, check the site linked here. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
Pull up previous posts by its left sidebar, or type in the brand name and model number to of your set, to its search box, and press 'Enter' or view it in Mosaic / Timeslide option.

While watching tv I touch something on the remote to make the tv go into "on timer" The red light is blinking. I have removed power then on again the remote and tv controls work but after 4...

Check the remote carefully for a stuck button. You may have pressed a button and it went a bit crooked getting stuck.
Also, remove the batteries of the remote and try operating the TV manually. If the remote is the cause, the TV will work correctly once you remove the batteries.
Another way to check is by using a digital camera, like the one in a cell phone. Turn on the camera and point it at the remote. If you see a white light coming from the transmitter, the remote is sending a signal. Look for a stuck button.

I pressed the sleep button by accident and the pic and sound went off and the stand by/timer red light started blinking. what does it mean?

Depends on how many times it blinks, just count the blinks Example: if it blink 2 times then pauses and blink 5 times then the code would be 25 and so on

Once you have this code, please post it.

TV will not come on with remote or power button

The following instructions are for the Emerson EWC1303/1903 tv/vcr. That's the closest match I could find to the Spongebob Squarepants 13' TV
If it's actually in Sleep mode, do the following:

TO CANCEL THE SLEEP TIMER
Press the WAKE UP/SLEEP button on the remote
control until “SLEEP TIMER” appears.
To view the time left for sleep timer press the WAKE
UP/SLEEP button twice, then press the MENU button
on the remote control to exit the sleep timer setting

If unsuccessful, try unplugging the TV for 1/2 hour, then plug it in and try turning it back on either manually or with the remote. Either of these should solve your problem. Best of luck to you!

JVC tv "stuck" on sleep timer

I think you would have to turn off the sleep timer mode completely or increase its ON time span, say to 4 hours or so
or the lenth of time you have the TV on for. If that does not fix it then it sounds like a STANDBY MODE fault problem.
Hope this helps.
