Sounds like your camcorder may have a defective CCD unit. What is the model number, I can check the CCD recall list and see if its on there. If it is, I think Canon is still taking in cameras for repair under the recall.

Hello, my canon zr90's screen is black, if i record the audio records but it still records a black screen as if the lens cover was on.

Hi - Canon has an advisory on this and may still fix that particular problem well past the warranty expiration date. You should check their website.

When i set to camera mode the screen is black in both the view finder and external screen. i can still zoom in and out its just all black. its a canon zr60 (yes the lens cap is off ha ha)

See this link. If you can still see menu items and icons on the LCD, you may have a bad image sensor (CCD). Contact Canon for confirmation and a free repair if this is the problem.

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.
