You probably need to update or inatall a driver for your sound card. If your Compaq came with the Creative Sound Blaster you can get the driver from www compaq.com or from Creative.com If not you have to find the model number for your sound card
please go to HP web site , look under trublshouthing &drivers , enter your pc info as they ask (they have example what to type) and follow the screen , (chose what ever oprating system you have ,like: XP, Vista,.....) it will take you to wher you can find all drivers including your sondcard.
when you are downloading chose save(save it in desktop or where ever you are comftable, ) after it DL is finished open it , you will be good to go ,
prefrly after DL restart your pc.
let me know if you need more assistans.

Hello vatsala, Try downloading and installing the latest sound drive available for your motherboard. Here is the link. http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/D845GVSR/ If that doesn’t work, try using another set of speakers to make sure it’s not your speakers that are bad and if that doesn't work, you may have a bad sound card and will need to put in new sound card. Sincerely, Agent Xiong
