Question about Sharp Computers & Internet

3 Answers

Help! Any assistance or advice would be very much appreciated. I have a Sharp LL T19D1-B LCD Minitor purchased a little over 3 years ago. I had a mac plugged into one analogue input of monitor, screen suddenly displayed random vertical multi coloured lines then wouldn't power up again. I've disconnected everything, checked cable and graphics card output on another monitor - which are fine. I can change the input channels on monitor but all I get is a bright green screen and no apparent output from graphics card. Any suggestions much appreciated. Regards, Paul

Thank you both ToddG and kornho. I guess it's time for the soldering iron as I've got nothing to lose should it go wrong! Could either of you point me towards the right board within the monitor then I can try and get the components and a steady hand to attempt to fix the problem. Will let you know how I get on, Thanks again for your advice.  Cheers, Paul

This is the power supply inside the monitor itself. It is board that has three capacitors and they are blown out. It is a very inexpensive fix, if you are good with a soldering iron, if not let mw know and I will direct you to a company that can take care of this, for usually $30.00

These should more or less be the instructions for the monitor. I have adapted them from other monitors, so the disassembly could be a little off, but the PCB capacitors is correct

The cause of this problem is the failure of 1 (or more) of 3 capacitors that are a part of the power supply.

    Tools needed
    Phillips head screw drivers.
    Flat tip screw driver.
    Soldering iron and solder.
    Wire cutter

    Skills needed

Only basic tools and simple soldering techniques are required. There are a lot of steps listed below, but they are quite simple and detailed.

    Cautions
We are dealing with electricity here, so take the necessary precautions not to electrocute yourself or burn your house down.
Please take written notes. It is all too easy to forget how something plugged into something else.

    The fix
Replace the three capacitors with new ones.

Order 3 capacitors with the following specifications: 470uF 25V High Temp Radial Capacitor (470µF 25V).

Disconnect the monitor from the computer and the 110 power source.
    Remove both cables completely.

Lay the monitor face down on a large flat surface. You may want to lay a towel down beneath the monitor to protect the bezel.

Remove the 4 phillips head screws that secure that stand to the back of the computer and set the stand aside.

Remove the 3 phillips head screws that secure the bottom of the bezel.

Using a wide, flat bladed screwdriver, carefully pry the back cover off. It is made out of plastic, so be careful. It will pop off fairly easily. Once off, set it aside.

Note the rectangular center metal piece that is screwed to the main body of the monitor. This is the where the power supply is located.
There will be adhesive foil stuck around various locations on the back of the monitor. Lift it away if you can...or VERY CAREFULLY cut it if you cannot. CAUTION: There are wires beneath most of these foil pieces, so be very careful.

Make a note of where each wire goes.

    Unplug all the wires.

Remove the 4 phillips head screws that secure the rectangular center metal piece to the main body of the monitor. Withdraw the metal piece and set the main body of the monitor aside.

Flip the removed piece over so as to expose the circuit boards.

Pull off the clear plastic protective piece. Try to keep it intact as you will want to put it back in place during assembly.

The power supply circuit board is the one into which the power cord is normally fitted.

Remove the 4 phillips head screws that secure the power supply circuit board in place. Note that one of the screws is different (designed to ensure a good ground connection). Note where it is located so you can return it to the same location.

Very carefully withdraw the power supply circuit board. It is connected to the neighboring board with a pin connector that slides out.

Identify the three capacitors. They are black with silver tops and have a gray stripe on one side that signifies the location of the negative post. The manufacturer is CapXon and the "470uF 25V" (470µF 25V) specification is printed on the side.

Note the location of the negative post. The circuit board is also marked.

Using a soldering iron, unsolder each post from the board:
Ensure the soldering iron is very hot.

Hold the board in a vertical position.

Use a finger to place light pressure on the capacitor as if you are prying the capacitor away from the post that you will be unsoldering.

Touch the tip of the soldering iron to the post (on the under side of the board).

Maintain pressure on the capacitor as the soldering iron heats the post.

When the solder liquefies, the capacitor will pull away from that post.

Repeat this technique for both posts on each capacitor.

Insert the new capacitors being sure that the negative post is inserted in the proper hole. The circuit board is marked. Or, you can refer to your notes.

    Solder each post in place.

Trim the excess length off each post.

    Reassemble in reverse order.

Test the monitor with the power cord only (no connection to the computer) before plugging it back into the computer.

If you tested the video card and the connection from your monitor to your mac and that worked using another monitor.. you need to replace your lcd display, your description does sound like monitor that just died.

unless you are trained you don't want to start poking the inside of your lcd display.

Sharp Aquos has distorted colors

The set should be transported upright but that rarely causes these issues-----suspect either main signal board or also possible is the power supply (for voltages changing when set is on).

Also if set was opened look for all plugs to be seated--ones with cloth tape where they connect look at first.

failing that based on age of set consider having a technician look at it or if over 3 years consider a new set with extended warranty--70% of this type of set in our shop (100 plus sets at any time in for repair) are less than 3 years old.

Monitor says out off sync

You need to set your PC video resolution to the native resolution of this monitor for best picture, please see your manual.
Right now the resolution is too high for the monitor to display.

Display blank - green led on and goes to orange when no input - so psu probably ok - where do I start looking?

kilo2_tango2, You walked into this one!!! Let's cheer everybody up with a few laughs first. "where do I start looking??? Maybe in your pocket for lots of 10s & 20s. You will need them to do a swapout for a refurbished unit from SHARP, IF???? they even have a swapout program. "so psu probably ok" Well, maybe yes, maybe no. Is this psu a little black box that lays on floor, or are you refering to a internal to the monitor "switch-mode-power-supply" unit? By the way, you didn't even calculate for us the approximate number of "on" hours this unit has!! Ahh...Yes! You did type "display blank"!! I will assume that it is or was connected to a PC capable of displaying the WIN-desktop screen?? If such was the case, did you even do the "flashlight" test to see if the data made it to the screen? even if the CCFT's aren't lit up BRIGHT-WHITE on rear of LCD panel? Due to a INVERTER BOARD failure to supply 800-1200 v ac to light up the CCFT's. Well, k2t2 I hope some of this was helpful. Got to run now! I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel@aim get back to me if any of this made sense..
