Laptops often do not have a dedicated CMOS battery, but use a hardwired device which you have to unsolder and solder back.
You don't want to do that without some decent experience.
There are two basic kinds of passwords that will be prompted for by the IBM BIOS, computer and HDD. (You can tell the difference by the icon prompt).
If this is a HDD password, there are no options for recovery in the US. Federal laws prohibit possession of the software to access the secure portion of the disk. The computer passwords are also not able to be cleared locally.
The unit can be sent to an IBM's maintenance and support center and they will either clear the PW or in some cases replace the planar. If you just purchased the laptop, contact the previous owner for the passwords. If not, then sending it in for maintenance is your best bet.

You will have to open up your laptop (gently pull up the keyboard after taking out the screws on the bottom of the laptop) and remove the CMOS battery on the motherboard for about a minute and then put it back it to reset the password. The CMOS battery is the only battery present on the motherboard and it looks like a large watch battery (thin, silver wafer). Don't worry... this will only reset the password and will not cause any data loss on your hard drive.

Hi I have an ibm thinkpad R52 and recently the batt gave up on me and it took a while before i was able to get it back on. But when i turn it on. The bios is asking for password and i dont know what to do...

To reset the BIOS password read the information from this link.

In case of your IBM laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.

I can't open bios of T30 ThinkPad IBM computer because I do not know bios passwords.I want to know way of open?

if you've forgotten the BIOS password, you'll have to check with IBM. Often, they have a way, usually a temp password like method that you can use to disable the BIOS password. for desktop systems, removing and reconnecting the coin-cell battery or a password reset jumper can be used, try to check the manual of your laptop if that applies to you as well.

How clear power on password in laptop

You have 3 choice (i mean, thats all i know:) )

1: Get a new BIOS
2: Get the password from latest user (dont know if laptop yours or not)
3: Get the BIOS Flashed (Which is costly)

There is no way to unlock it without open it ,sorry.

Reset password thinkpad 2656

Resetting the BIOS Password using Software Every system must store the BIOS password information somewhere. If you are able to access the machine after it has been booted successfully, you may be able to view the BIOS password. You must know the memory address where the BIOS password is stored, and the format in which the BIOS password is stored. Or, you must have a program that knows these things.
You can write your own program to read the BIOS password from the CMOS memory on a PC by writing the address of the byte of CMOS memory that you wish to read in port 0x370, and then reading the contents of port 0x371.
!BIOS will recover the BIOS password for most common BIOS versions, including IBM, American Megatrends Inc, Award and Phoenix.
CmosPwd will recover the BIOS password for the following BIOS versions:
  • AMI WinBIOS 2.5
  • Award 4.5x/4.6x/6.0
  • Compaq (1992)
  • Compaq (New version)
  • IBM (PS/2, Activa, Thinkpad)
  • Packard Bell
  • Phoenix 1.00.09.AC0 (1994), a486 1.03, 1.04, 1.10 A03, 4.05 rev 1.02.943, 4.06 rev 1.13.1107
  • Phoenix 4 release 6 (User)
  • Gateway Solo - Phoenix 4.0 release 6
  • Toshiba
  • Zenith AMI
