WD My Book 1TB, not recognised by XP

Hi Benimur. My WD 1TB My book worked perfectly until I plugged a USB2 hub into my computer. ever since the computer has failed to recognise the "My Book". I have reinstalled all my drivers, powered the unit off & on and I am using wall power. Do you have any suggestions??

    Thanks Benimur. I tried your suggestions. My digital camera works fine in the USB port. I don't have quick access to another PC so haven't tried the HD on different system yet. I checked the registry. My settings are identical to yours including the (3). What I did do then was to plug the USB hub back into my PC and try running the HD through the hub. I now have my HD back !! (stranger things have happened)......Thanks for your advice & trouble shooting tips.

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

A couple of ideas:

  • initially, confirm that it is the PC's USB ports that is the issue by trying the WD on another PC;
  • try plugging in a flashdrive, camera to your PC's USB port;
  • if it has been verified that the WD works in other PCs and that the USB port of your computer works, then it could be a registry entry.
Please open "regedit":
  • go to HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\USBstor;
  • check the value of the DWORD "Start" it should be 3;
  • If the DWORD "Start" does not exist, pls create it. Right click, New, DWORD value, Start, Value Data = 3.
Incidentally, there is Microsoft KB about disabled/disabling USB here.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I fixed that problem with a WDC My Book Home 1TB in Windows 7:

The drive was recognized in computer management and in device manager but no drive letter was allocated while connected with a e-sata cable.

1.in computer management > storage > disk management
2.rightclick drive 1 or wathever the number of the WDC drive (which should be basic at this time)
3.select 'convert to dynamic disk'
4.drive should get a drive letter
5.format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

Succes!

No power to my WD 1TB

If its under warranty then get it sent back.

If its not then almost any 3.5 " external sata enclosure will do so long as it has its own power supply. and if that supply is a wall-wart then should you pooch that, they are so easy to pick up and replace.

If you need quick access to the files remove the disk and fit it to a suitable computer.

Computer freezes on start-up when western digital 1tb external hdd plugged in to computer, computer starts fine with it unplugged. The hard drive can be plugged back in after start-up.

This is a known problem with these drives. Disabling USB legacy support in your Bios should solve the problem., it did in my case but at the expense of not being able to boot from a USB device. Definitley a problem with their enclosure or drive.
