You need to replace the Thermocouple. (pilot safety device) It would be best to call a Technician about this.

SOURCE: Gas boiler won't stay lit!

The burners and pilot need to be cleaned.
Turn off gas and power, remove the burners and pilot. Clean with a brass wire brush. (Steel wire can be used but very carefully) Remove all rust dirt etc. reinstall and it should fire right up.

Hello,If you cleaned the flame sensor and it is in the pilot flame,Try adding a ground wire from the pilot assembly to any close screw to boost the (pilot on) signal. Also if the valve has been sitting for a while give a tap once during (pilot on) to make sure the diaphram is just not hung up.I would hate to replace the valve and still have the same problem.

When the gas boiler comes on the pilot light goes out after about 60 seconds then reignites itself a few minutes later.

This is caused by a weak flame sensing device. As main burner ignitin occurs this creates a roll out condition , when this condition occurs it derives oxygen from the pilot light thus reducing flame signal and causing the pilot to drop off momentarily.

You are half-way right, to light the pilot, light it and push down the red button and hold it for at ----least2-minutes-- till the flame heats up the pin (thermocouple- which fire-thermocouple metal makes electricity which sends it to the gas valve and says ,OK GAS VALVE,I'VE GOT A PILOT FLAME SO OPEN UP THE MAIN GAS VALVE! See where I'm going with this?

Old ideal tybe b boiler piolet light working but burner not working

There are a couple of things this may be, so will need checking to rule them out as the cause.

There is a "hot wire" sensor in the pilot flame that allows the main gas valve to come on when it gets hot.

You will need to check the output from this when cold, and when hot. It's a safety feature to prevent gas escaping when not lit.

When cold, check there is continuity in the gas valve coils. A faulty gas valve will not open. This should only be replaced by registered trades people if it is faulty.

Check the blower motor coils in the same way for continuity. If they are defective, they will not allow power to the gas valve either - or it will cause overheating.

If everything checks out ok on the boiler side, try jumping the thermostat contacts, and see if it fires up. If it does - replace the thermostat.

Thanks for using Fixya!
