    Hi dnx8,

Yeah ok I think that sounds good maybe if you get a chance could you detail the steps a little more as Im just getting into fixing stuff for myself and dont want to make the problem worse by doing something wrong.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...Thanks again.

Hi,

you said that the usb ports are not working even if you updated the bios and chipset.what we can do is that we need to load default settings on your bios. If ever that wont work it simply means that your motherboard is having the problem. call dell tech support and they will be able to replace your motherboard if they found out that the problem is indeed your motherboard. Call us at dell. Thanks.

I see.. Troubleshoot your PC first before reinstalling XP. Go to BIOS first and enable USB emmulator. Then if you have a thumb drive or a flash drive, plug it in your USB port. You need to have the CD for us to go to recovery console. Go to recovery console and then try to check if your able to see the USB device plugged in to your system. If ever you see that the device is recognize and can be access outside windows or in DOS, that means that windows is having the problem and not the USB port. That is the time that we can say that we need to reinstall OS. got it? if you have any problems with the steps just post it and I will be very glad to assist you with it. OKEY? ^_^

All USB devices give 'can perform faster' message on one PC

If your WD hard drive is external usb, check to make sure it is not usb3.0. Are you using a PCI-based usb card or are the ports built into motherboard? The first thing I always do on any pc is look at the properties of each usb port in device manager and uncheck the box under power management that allows the computer to turn port off to save power. If you are using a pci based card then I would go to the manufacturers site and see if there are driver updates for XP first. If that does not work remove the pci card from device manager and reboot the pc, when windows sees the new hardware do not let windows install the drivers, go to windows update and let it scan for and install latest drivers. hope it helps

Recently, when I insert a USB flash drive into my laptop's USB port, I get the message: This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a HI-SPEED USB 2.0 port.

Your laptop has USB1 port and the USB 2 message will appear if you plug an USB 2 device into this USB port.
You maybe able to upgrade the USB port to USB 2 if there is a BIOS upgrade available from the laptop manufacturer's WEB site.
If not you maybe able to get an USB 2 PCMCIA card to install into the PCMCAI slot on your laptop.

USB ports work at 1.1; s/b 2.0

Your computer is functioning correctly.
The USB ports on your laptop are USB1 ports its pard of the hardware.
Your PCMCIA USB 2 card runs at USB 2 speed and therefore when you connect a USB 2 device to this port you will not get this USB message.

Usb 2.0

Hi,
this is a common error with operating systems and devices.
If you go into my Computer/system/device manager. And remove the installed USB devices. shutdown the computer, and reboot it. then try putting your USB device in.
What general happens, is that if you have had an older device in the USB port at any time, the port configures itself to this setting. options are to try another port on the computer ( some older ports only support usb1.1 )
ensure you have up to date drivers on the connecting device and on the connecting computer.
Hope this helps Mike @ Compurepair.

USB2 high speed not recognize

Try opening up the device manager and unistall everything in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Then reboot and let windows reinstall the USB controllers. Windows should now be able to recognize properly USB2 devices.

USB 2.0 doesn't work on K8MM-V with XP PRO SP2???

bc3486e.gif

hey!

ok now the K8MM-V has several 'chipsets' yours has 8 usbs? yes?

then you have the:

VIA VT8237R Chipset...
- Integrated Faster Ethernet LPC
- Integrated Hardware Sound Blaster/Direct Sound AC97 audio
- Ultra DMA 66/100/133 master mode PCI EIDE controller
- ACPI
- Supports 2 Serial ATA ports
- Supports 8 USB2.0 ports

ok? now:

download a new BIOS! this means read the readme.txt please!

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=2383&i=1

<<this is the xp(64bit driver set>> (incase you are missing the 2.0 or yours is corrupt)

http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=173

this is your BIOS (as i said please follow ALL instructions cause its inportant)

good luck!

after BIOS flash and driver updated go into the control panel > admin. settings > computer managment > device manager then look at the USB section and update the drivers!!

rerstart and volla!

good luck!
