Hi,

Most GPS would have a cigarette lighter adapter to charge the unit while in the car. If you vehicle has onle 1, then it would be needed to pullout the cigarette lighter and use that for the charger. If your unit does not have a cigarette lighter adapter/charger, then pls post back the brand/model.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

The car charger input is +12VDC and +5VDC at the plug that plugs into the Nuvi. Make sure your car +12V outlet is working. Try another device in the outlet. Check that the fuse in the charger tip isn't blown. The tip unscrews. Be careful, the charger tip, fuse and spring can shoot out. Cup your hand over the end while you use the other hand to slowly unscrew the charger tip. You can have a bad charger plug or cradle. Also, try pressing the reset button, underneath of the flip up antenna assembly. SHARCNET USA Out of Warranty GPS Consumer Electronics Repair Center

How do fix phone charger plug in uplander

First-check the fuse! Usually all devices have a fuse in the plug-normally you unscrew a ring and ithe end cap and the fuse with a spring will come out. Check this fuse first. Sometimes the plug is harder to open to get to the fuse, but there should be one in there. Next is the car fuse. It is easiest to plug in another device to see if it is the car or the device. If another device still does not work, find the car fuses. Behind the panel on the right hand side of the dash - you must open the passenger door to reveal it. It is possible the fuse could be located in a second fuse block in the engine compartment just behind the battery. If the fuse is good, the outlet itself may have stopped working. This can happen if the connection is poor and a bigger load device (like an air pump or bigger inverter) will cause a lot of heat. A replacement outlet can be bought at the dealer.

Charges at home on a usb port but not in the car

Hi Carl,

You should check your car's fuses to see if the one that supplies power to your USB charger is still good. If you're not sure how to do this, you could try plugging a different device into it and see if it works. If it doesn't - you'll need to inspect the fuse or wiring. (you could also try the charger in a different port or different car to see if the issue is tied to the charger).

If the other device does work, it is possible that the charger has a built in fuse. If the charger is the type that plugs into your cigar lighter, you may find the the tip holds the fuse. The tip may reveal the fuse if unscrewed from the body or may require a screw driver to open the body. Either way, you'll need to ascertain if there is a fuse in it and if so, check its condition.

Sometimes, the charger needs to be aligned a certain way in the cigar lighter / power port (or outlet) due to the way some automakers and device manufacturers design the connections. Repeatedly remove and replace the plug in the lighter / port. Each time, turn the the plug slightly so that it takes 6 to 8 insertions to rotate all the way around in the outlet. This should provide at least one position that allows the plug to make the required contact in the lighter / power port.

Lastly, make sure that there is no foreign object / debris in the outlet, that the the plug fits snugly in the outlet, the the plug's tip has a spring pushing it forward and that the plug is fully inserted into the outlet.

Hopefully, one of these suggestions will get it working. Good luck!

My GARMIN nuvi works well on battery. When I plug it into the car chargeing outlet, I get a display of a unit plugged into an electricial outlet and the GARMIN will not respond. Acts like its locked up....

Sometimes this is caused by the mini USB plug not being pushed fully into the back of the satnav although it feels as if it is. Pushing it in further may solve your problem.

It could be a problem with the mini USB plug on the charger. If it doesn't go in far enough it will cause that problem. Try pushing it in further. If that doesn't work you'll need to get a Garmin power cord.

Why should my GPS indicate a low battery even though it is plugged into my AC outlet in my car?

It sounds like the unit is not being charged when it is plugged into the car. Does it come on when you plug it in, or do you have to press the power button? If you have to press the button, the charger is not sending power to the unit. Make sure it is connecting properly to the unit and that it is seated in the AC outlet correctly. If it is, check the fuse in the end to see if it has blown. If so, replace it. If that is not the problem, you may have a problem with the AC outlet in the car.

Cannot recharge using car recharger - no red light showing on charger plug in. Do not seem to have been supplied with a mains adaptor. Help Thanks Paul

Check the fuse in the car charger by unscrewing the tip - the red light should be on whenever it is supplied with power. Otherwise check your vehicle fuse to the 12 volt outlet (or try another device in the outlet).

I can't charge my GPS while I am in the car

Verify that the car cigarette lighter outlet is working. Do you have something that you could plug into the lighter like a light?

With the car running plug the Garmin into the cigarette lighter outlet. Does it come on without pushing the ON button? If the answer is no then there is either a problem with the cable or the cigarette lighter outlet. It should come on by itself if the lighter is working. Also are you using Garmin cables and DC adapter?
