Question about Washing Machines

Noise at the *** end of the spin cycle

Hello,
i stay in india.my w/machine is whirpool (whitemagic) model no F65. had got your outlook on an earlier problem with my machine. helped me to ask pertinent questions to my repair-guy. i think a new problem has arised. during the spin cycle when the spinning is done and it's winding down a noise has started to emanate from the machine. some sort of knocking sound. the sound is heard at the very ***(through the last 1/4 ) end of each individual round of spin.it isn't there when the spinning is on the rise. i hope this question makes sense to you. my machine is abt 1 1/2 yrs old with infrequent use.

    hi,

glad to see that you understood the problem inspite of me putting it up so awkwardly. this is experience i guess. tried turning the basket , no noise absolutely except a wee bit sloshing of the residual water from somewhere beneath. 1) the noise is not loud enough for you to notice instantly. while winding down the knocking sound is slight accompanied by another noise (usually this kind of noise comes when friction between a part and some rubber "thing" is exaggerated) 2)water is being spun out of the clothes as usual. i have phrased the above information in a way i could do best. hope it will help you to understand the problem better.

Hi pils,
As before I am not sure how your machine is built, but what you describe sounds like a problem with either the basket drive block or the brake system.
The basket is going to be mounted to the spin tube with some sort of aluminum adaptor and a nut, at least that's how most all our machines are made. Sometimes the drive block becomes unseated from the drive tube coming up from under the machine and will make a lot of noise when the brake applies at the end of the cycle. This is usually accompanied by the water not being spun out of the clothes as well as it should.
It may be the brake "jumping" when it applies to stop the basket.
What ever it is, it has something to do with the load being reversed when the spin stops. When the machine is spinning, the torque from the motor is transferred through the drive mechanism to turn the basket. When the motor shuts off, this torque is reversed as the momentum of the weight of the spinning load of clothes becomes the driving force and it is transferred back down through the machine until it stops.
Try turning the basket by hand in the direction of the spin and see if you can recreate the noise at at a slow enough speed to be able to pinpoint where it is coming from.

I wish I could be of more help. I have only been able to find some sales information on your machine, no technical or repair information.
If you can get access to the drive and and braking mechanism of the washer, try using a silicone or graphite based lubricant on the brake parts. Don't use a petroleum lube as this may degrade the brake liner material.
You may also try reposting your problem. There are several experts on fixya from India and it is likely someone else will have better knowledge of your machine. There are so many questions posted on the free side of the site that most of them are never seen by someone that may know the answer.

I have an equator washer/dryer combo. It seems to have a few problems. The washer doesn't spin during the spin cycle, although it spins during the rest of the wash cycle. The pump is making a weird...

I have one of these things, too, an EZ 3612 CEE. I've replaced the pump on mine, but I am in no way an appliance technician. However, your problem seems like an electronics problem to me and the service people I've spoke to about this machine have told me that the main circuit boards in these machines fail regularly. That has yet to happen to me. I would suggest calling the equator service number. You'll be connected to some technician in India, almost certainly. But my experience with these guys has been great. They have VERY patiently talked me through a couple of different diagnostic procedures and solved some problems. Don't have the phone # just now but you can google equator appliance and get it.

The model numbers are different in the U.S. so I am not sure if I can give you correct advise.
The only Whirlpool models I am aware of that use suspension rods are the Calypso and Cabrio. These are high effeciency topload washers. The symptoms you describe are fairly common in the Calypso after a few years use.
The springs inside the leveler break and cause little or no agitation. The viberation and spinning problem sounds like a worn drive tube. The excess wear in the shaft allows too much movement of the basket during spin which causes noise and out of balance conditions. This would be an expensive repair here and most people will usually replace the machine rather than repairing it.
I am going to be out all day, but will try to find some information on your model this evening and post back if I come up with better information.
Thanks, Mike
