Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

We have had this tv for about 3 years now. all of a sudden the bottom left hand corner has some red and green messing with whatever appears in that area and also the top portion of the screen all the way across does the same , also gives it a little blurr. its just the middle section of the screen that appears ok but still has a slight blurr. any idea what this can be or how it can be fixed?

You will need to replace both STK392-120 Convergence ICs and you will also need four 6.8 ohm 1 watt resistors. You can get the replacement ICs and resistors at the following link with free instructions with pictures,

Magnavox rear projectin television

Check the fuse first, if you are luck, probably you only need to change the fuse otherwise you probably need a new TV.

Turn off home electrity power or unplug all the expensive units when it is lighting to protect them.

Picture problems

The convergence amps have most likely failed. This is the number one leading cause for the symptom your describing and the most common failure on that unit.
Your Tv take two STK392-120 Sanyo Ics for convergence amps, located at Ic7404 and Ic7405 on the board and mounted to a rather large aluminum heat sink. In addition you will most likely have to replace R3159 and R3160 (6.8 ohm 1w) resistors and test the remaining low ohm resistors for change in value.
A shop would really be earning their money on this particular unit if they charged $400 - $500 for the repair. It is an extremely difficult set to work on and there are a number of little problems that can reach-out and bite when attempting the repair.
Good luck!
