My 42" Toshiba has a thin colored line across the screen when I turn it on, it does have sound. After 10-15 minutes the screen starts widening and then it will be OK. But this happens everytime I turn it on.

What is wrong and will it be expensive to fix it?

If the line of which you speak is a horizontal line that looks like the picture collapsed, the problem is a vertical circuit problem. If hitting the set "fixes" it, then it is likely to be a bad solder connection. If you can solder, resolder the pins on the vertical IC. This is a small flat IC with about 11pins attached to a heat sink that may me marked LA7837 or something similar.

Let me know if that fails to resolve the problem.

Sinegalnatal -
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that sounds like your TV is broken. There's very little chance that you'll be able to fix it yourself, as modern televisions are incredibly complicated and dangerous to work in without training. I'd suggest sending it in for service if it's still under warranty. If not, you could look in to a local TV repair place.
Good luck!

TV TURNS ON,LINES ACROSS SCREEN THEN TURNS OFF BY ITSELF

sounds like a vertical problem, usually you'll see one white line across the screen, but one I worked on would come on and the bottom half of the picture was gone and there were lines across the top of the screen.

If you know how to solder & can find the vertical output chip then you could try resoldering the pins. If this doesn't fix it then it needs new parts.

Lines run across the top fifth of the screen and I cannot get rid of them. It is not a problem with the cable.

This is an easy repair if you've ever soldered. and would nt be to costly for a repair shop to do it for you. The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminium heat sink with the part on it labelled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by resolderin the contacts of the IC

Television only has one working line across the screen

Assuming that this is a CRT type TV, the problem is either bad solder connection at the vertical IC or a defective IC. If you could post the exact make and model of the set, I can provide a more detailed description of what needs to be done.

Thanks,
Dan

Something loose in the tv

If the "line" is a singular line in the center of the set, the problem is bad connections on the vertical IC. If you can solder, you can fix this your self simply by resoldering the pins on the IC. This should be a small flat IC attached to a heat sink. It will be marked LA7837 or something similar and have about 9-11 pins.

Please note that there are potentially dangerous high voltages present inside the set even when unplugged. Be careful.

Thin lines across the screen

This is a vertical problem
could be bad soldier bad caps or a burend resistor in the verticl section.
vertical repair kit cost about $39, but youl need a tech to do the install.
tv shop should repair for about 60 to 80 usd.

Horiz. lines across top of screen.

I agree with solution #2

I recently had my phillips 27" model 27PT6341/07 repaired after warranty expired due to white lines appearing at the top of the screen. The shop advised that it was a capacitor giving me the problem. So, after getting it back, I examined the repair job and the shop had replaced a capacitor at the back of the main board, next to the rear rca inputs. It is labeled 10uf 100v. I was told that it would fail again soon because it is a manufactures defect. For me it is at location 2465. Here are a couple of photos of the part.

Toshiba cx35f70 35"

It could be a bad solder connection on either the crt drive board that attaches to the neck of the picture tube, the video processing circuits on the main printed circuit board or the picture tube itself. If you can lightly bang the sides or top of the set to get the symptom to come/go, then it is most likely a bad connectiion. If, when the screen goes green, you see fine white lines diagnonally across the screen about a half inch apart, then it is likely the picture tube.
