Question about HP Deskjet 6940 InkJet Printer

Printer prints top two inches of the page, then quits

On several types of files (word documents, web page printouts, PDF files) the printer prints the first couple of inches of the page, then quits and spits out the page, otherwise blank.

This doesn't happen when I press the test button, or when I print out an email. I get the full page in those cases.

    Hi everyone,

I just bought a new HP Deskjet 6940, and it seems broken from the very start. I have installed the driver-only version on hp.com. My system is Win XP Pro. Here's a list of problems:

    - It prints only the first part of the first page, then spits it out. Most of the time it only prints the first inch or so, but at times it goes farther.

    - It prints a test pattern (lines and squares etc.) after every job.

    - The test pattern comes out differently every time, but generally the top and bottom parts are missing, judged from the most complete (but still not complete) printouts.

    - The Windows test page (that says Congratulations yadda yadda yadda) is frequently cut off. I have no idea what it will look like complete, but sometimes the list of driver files is only 3 items, and sometimes it goes all the way to the bottom.

I have tried pdf, doc and htm files. The files are not too big. I've closed other program. I've removed and reinstalled the driver. I've restarted the system over and over. I've checked the Services as Ellin suggested. No luck. I'm very desperate to be frank; this is my first printer and you can imagine the excitement. I'll appreciate any help. Thanks a mil!

I originated this thread, with the problem stated at the top. Further detail follows..

I've followed the instructions and still have the difficulty.. with some print jobs, not all, the first two inches of the first page will print out, then the rest of the first page will be blank.. then second and third and fourth pages of the print job will print out normally.

I have discovered that if I add a blank page to the front end of a print job, such as a blank first page in a Word document, I can work around the problem.

Hi there,

Thanks for your posting in FixYa.

It is the spooler error getting in your Case.

Try this to kill the dependancy services that are not starting:

Remove all Print Spooler service dependencies other than the Remote Procedure Call service.

1 Click Start, Run and enter sc config spooler depend= RPCSS (there must be a space after "=" but not before it.)

2. By removing the other dependencies the Print Spooler service should be able to run, but the printer functionality may be affected, and it may be necessary to reinstall the printer drivers.

3. Don't forget to go back to services.msc \ right-click Print Spooler, and then click Properties.
Make sure that the startup type is set to Automatic. If it is not, click Automatic in the Startup type list, and then click Apply.

4. Under Service status, click Start.

5. Click OK to close the Print Spooler Properties dialog box

Otherwise go for reinstall the printer and its driver.

Regards
Ellin

Hi Ellin, I'm sorry I didn't update the state of the problem. My printer started working normally after one night. I'm not sure what did it; it just fixed itself it seemed. I think it had to do with the driver. I first installed the barebone driver and it screwed up, then I installed the driver with all the bells and whistles (maintenance, photo editing software etc.) and then it works. Thanks a lot for all the help. I'll give you a good vote anyway. Have a great day!

Set up your printer to save ink and paper (ECO MODE)
Step 1. To specify print settings in any open application go to File, Print or File, Print Preview, then choose Print Preferences. The options available will vary depending on the printer model you're using, but you'll probably be offered the ability to print in Draft or Economy mode and to a set page range.
Step 2. If you're printing long documents, reduce the page margins to fit more lines on each sheet. Open the program the document was created in and alter the margins in the document settings. Alternatively, you may be able to reduce the margins using the ruler guides. In WordPad, you'll need to look in the Page Setup menu.

Step 3. One way to save paper is to print more than one page of your document on each side of paper. Your printer will almost certainly have settings for this, and you may also find them within the software you're using. Be sure to check that the resulting text isn't too small to read, however.
Step 4. Duplex printing is the term used for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. Not all printers are equipped with this feature, but it's a useful way to conserve paper and produce professional-looking documents. Carefully consider whether you want to flip the page on the long or short edge.
Step 5. Most programs have a print preview feature; use this to see how your document will look on the page before printing it out. You can tweak your page as much as you like, only making a final printout once you're happy with the result. This can save money on paper and ink usage, as well as reducing the wear and tear on your printer.
Step 6. Third-party software can help you reduce the amount of ink you use. InkSaver costs £20 or you can try it free for 15 days. We also like the look of the soon-to-launch Ecofont, which perforates text with holes that are invisible to the ***** eye in order to use less ink.

Print to PDF rather than paper
Step 1. A PDF is an exact electronic version of a document that's viewable on almost any device. A PDF protects the original document from editing by the reader, making the format ideal for marketing materials and digital magazines. Download and install the free version of Nitro PDF Reader.
Step 2. Nitro PDF Reader installs a printer driver that lets you export a document to PDF from any application's Print menu. To create a PDF version of your document, simply choose File, Print and select Nitro PDF Creator (Reader) from the list of available printers. Press Print and enter a name for your PDF.
Step 3. For greater speed and convenience, Nitro PDF Reader offers simplified, one-step conversion. Drag your chosen document from Windows Explorer on to the Nitro PDF Reader desktop icon. The conversion will begin at once, with the resulting PDF saved to your desktop.
Step 4. As well as exporting documents to PDF, the software lets you view them - if you're opening more than one then they'll appear on different tabs. Longer documents can be viewed as multiple pages by selecting the Tasks tab and then choosing between Single, Continuous, Facing and Facing Continuous views.

Unable to print to canon IR7200

More than likely their is a problem with the file or that it is too large to process and has gotten stuck in the que on the copier. Go into printer set up and find restart server or clear server - it's ussually at the back end of all the settings. You want to clear the server and restart it. Then try printing a few pages of the file to see if their is an issue with it. If that prints then print half of the file, if it's has a lot of graphics pick a smaller chunk. You can also restart the server through the copiers internal web page - to get to that type the copiers ip address into internet explorer and it should bring it up.

When i am giving a single page printout it will printout another copy of blankpage

Please open the document, There is probably a second page added to your word document.

Open the file, go to page 2, press backspace.

When you select print option, now check how many pages its showing for printout.

If its showing one page then your file is perfect now.

PDF documents do not print completely on my Xerox Phaser 8500

I am having the same problem. Sometimes my Xerox Phaser 8500 prints a PDF or web page fine, and other times I get pages and pages of what looks like PostScript code. I thought I had installed the most recent printer drivers, We are using primarily Macs with OS 10.4 or 10.5. One recent change is that we connected the printer to an Airport Express using a USB cable, which is sweet when it works correctly....any ideas???

HP Deskjet 5150 print is too small

Printers try to fit web pages on a single sheet of paper. If you configure the printer, in the print dialog, not to shrink images and text to fit the paper, it will print on multiple sheets of paper, but the correct size for the images and text.

In a Word document, it depends on what font size you have selected. Most people would rather have the web page print on a single sheet, with smaller images and text than were on the monitor; than tape together multiple sheets for 100% size printout.

Light printing issue

hmmm..light printing usually comes from the original resolution of the page. Seems that if your printer is printing a core document well, but the web page is light, that means the fonts on the web page are not dense enough for your printer to do it well. My read is that your printer is doing just what it should be
