Question about Philips 42PF9630A 42 in. Plasma Television
Ok, I know this is a long shot but I have to try. I was given a non-functional plasma tv. When plugged in a red light at the corner turns on, but the screen stays black. I am very tempted to open it up and see whats wrong inside. Am I better off taking it to a repair shop and paying the ridiculous amount that is needed to fix it by them, or is there some self diagnosis that I can play with before I have to take it in for repairs. Anything will help. Thanks!
If you have a knowledge of circuit testing or at the very least equipment to read the parameters of the components and how to tell their values then the first place to try is the power supply board as it sounds like the tv is stuck in standby. Pay attention to checking all the diodes you can find first and there might be a couple of I.Cs'(microchips to some) with between 4-10 pins on them and these are usually voltage regulators of some kind. Note their number down and lastly there is no way to check the mains transformer itself other than to test if you are getting the voltage of your country at some of the nearby components. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES try to touch a multimeter to any of the transformer pins because this is KILLER voltages. If you do have a go and then feel like you are in above your head please dont feel like you have failed just put back what you have moved and pay the kings ransom at the repair shop. One more thing. If the repairman asks if you have opened the tv or touched anything deny everything :-) good luck.
